This set does not suck.

This is great news--sounds like this set is what I've been looking for for years as far as TKAM is concerned...

A remarkable thing is how CLEAN these recordings are. So often recordings of this vintage have assorted little ticks and other noises, or dropouts or distracting clumsy edits or fades etc... but these are as clean as can be. You'll be very pleased with Mockingbird, I'm sure.

I got my copy and have been tremendously enjoying it! I totally agree with everything Basil has said about this set...right down to the reservations about BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL. I never warmed to that score either...I got the LP years ago at a cut-out price but rarely listened to it. I never even transferred it to CDR, something I avidly did for THE CARETAKERS and MOVIE AND TV THEMES. I'll probably give it few more chances because it does SOUND so much better. But exactly like Basil, it just doesn't sound much like Bernstein to me, and I never cared for that country-rock-jazz style.

Even with the double-dip for CARPETBAGGERS and my lack of enthusiasm for BTRMF, this set is so worth the money. WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, one of Bernstein's masterpieces, sounds glorious and I'm really happy to get THE CARETAKERS. I was very disappointed when the recent issue of the original movie tracks did not include the LP version because I actually prefer some of the LP performances. The Main Title is especially great in its LP arrangement. And it sounds better than I've ever heard it.

I've held off on MOCKINGBIRD to give it my full attention. I've never owned any version of the original LP, just the various re-recordings, so this should be a revelation.

Looking forward to hearing this very much. If they've found these masters, one wishes that they'd also do David and Lisa, which I love.

I agree. Let's get the rest of the äva catalog out there. There are three more score LPs:

DAVID & LISA by Mark Lawrence

THE TROUBLEMAKER by Cy Coleman

A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME by Joseph Weiss

And two compilation LPs:

LORD OF THE FLIES

NOW PLAYING!

By eliminating the tracks that are duplicated from the Bernstein set, these 5 LPs could easily fit on 2 CDs. DAVID & LISA was previously released on a Mainstream CD, coupled with A PATCH OF BLUE.

I was about to toss my Mainstream CDs when I noticed Mockingbird, Wild Side and the "A Man And His Movies" compilation are padded out with random recordings from Birdman Of Alcatraz, Cleopatra, Mutiny On The Bounty, A Girl Named Tamiko, 2 Weeks In Another Town and others. I guess these were pulled from those other Ava LPs.

This really is an exceptional set. Sound is stunningly good.
Already having The Carpetbaggers part of it, and not being keen on the Baby The Rain Must Fall score with its pop flavor, the set for me is about the other four albums. I'm pleased to say I rate all of those four as 10/10 quality... Strongest possible recommendation!

Basil, invariably my opinions are perfectly reflected in your witty remarks and comments, sometime very enjoyable (what a "divertissement" your "list of shame" on O.K. CORRAL!). So for the Ava Collection box, I agree with you about the little interest of BABY RAIN MUST FALL, I think enclosed for completeness, compared to the top five titles. Not having yet in my hands the ordered box, and fearing about the quality, I remained reassured by your report portraying an almost perfect sound. But a thing that has not been told is this: the CD release of these discs, compared to the old LP album editions, is technically important not only for the absence of hiss, rumble, skating, stylus error, if not tics and crackle, but for the constant flow of data. The LP album runs at 33,3 r.p.m., with constant rotation, and this gives a different linear speed on the external and the inner grooves. So we have a changing linear speed from about 20 to about 8,5 inches per second, that means a strong loss of quality from edge to center. For that reason, certain important tracks are located on the edge, while the less important in the center. As for TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, we had the A1 "Main Title" and B1 "Tree Treasure" at high speed and A5 "To Kill Mockingbird" and B6 "Summer's End" at low speed. The Ava box gives the perfect solution, and this is a further good reason to buy it even if the old albums are still mint and playable.

I just got the Ava set this afternoon. First thing - the Mockingbird disc. It is sublime and beautiful - get it for that alone. Quality considering time frame is Awesome. Still spinning on first take right now. Next up - I also got the new Blue Max.

Elmer Bernstein's film music is extraordinary as exhibited by this Ava Collection. What is superlative too is the sonics, it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. I never thoughts these scores could sound this good- plaudits to Doug at Intrada for searching years for the Masters.
