Some may buy as a result of reading they were "flops" in order to "support the label". I won't be one of those people, but I'm sure some will.

I've never heard of anybody buying a CD they don't want to support a label. It might inspire them to more quickly buy a CD they've been meaning to get anyway, I suppose. But buy one outright? Where do you get this from?

The slap -- and it is a slap, I agree -- is to openly root for failure so you can get a bargain. Why would you say such a thing to the people whose real money (and they are not deep-pocketed) is on the line? Would you say to a waiter "I hope other people tip you generously, because I will not"?

Buy what you want and what you can afford, of course. When sales come up, take advantage, by all means. But to openly hope for poor sales to benefit you is churlish to say the least.

I'm pretty sure there are people on this board who do that very thing, Schiffy. Buy CDs just to support the label, that is. I have no hard evidence on hand to support this claim, so please do not hurt me for this belief.

Maybe you're right. I don't know. I'll try not to hurt you, but sometimes I just can't control myself.

I never did that, nor would I ever do such a thing. I wish Quartet success in selling what they chose to release. I was responding to a comment concerning three releases which Quartet confirmed did not do well. Why would I even bother "rooting" for failure that already occurred? What a strange comment.

Anyway, no one seems very interested on this CD. I love the Cliff Eidelman's music, and Delirious and Crazy People was at the top of my wish-list, but have been (along Canadian Bacon) the three major flops in the history of our label, and all three are expensive productions.

In the case of Delirious, we have not sold even 300 units yet!. Bad times for comedy scores. And, of course, we will not put John Candy on the cover of a CD anymore ;-)

As the old saying goes (and I know this from BITTER EXPERIENCE)....

"Dying is Easy, COMEDY IS HARD"..

It's all too true in the world of soundtracks...

Except for the missing end credits song and track order that makes no sense, it's great to finally see this one available after all those years.
Not that many major Eidelman's scores left, but it would be also nice to finally see Sexual Life released and Open Window on CD.

The end credits song, although partially composed by Eidelman, it was impossible to include. In fact, the bundles rights of this song were to blame for the soundtrack album was not released at the time.

About the track order, this album, as you can read in the credits, has been produced by Cliff Eidelman himself, he has contractually the right to do in this way and we have respected his wish.

In relation to the track order - do you have the film order for the CD? (Sorry, but forgot to ask in my previous post)

Or you can just rent the movie and figure it out for yourself.

The trick is to call it Delirious and the Gladiators. Voila! smile

I love scores to comedies, but I never call them comedy scores and that's where film music fans err and they shouldn't - just because a film is a comedy doesn't mean it doesn't have GREAT film music. I always point to Heaven Can Wait - a wonderful comedy, and we sold really well on it. Others haven't fared quite so well, but thankfully they've all done okay enough to pay for themselves. Then again, a couple of dramatic scores by major composers have been disappointments. Luck of the draw, I suppose and dependent on what else is being released at the same time.

While I can't speak for any other label, I personally will not be abandoning scores to comic films because some of my all-time favorite scores would be lost to the ages otherwise. In fact, our next release is to a comic film.

This is how I read your post. If I misread it, then good, we agree!

Wow. 300 copies.
Well, maybe my thread has helped shift a few more units!? wink
I've bagged the odd 2 to 300 'reduced soundtrack' offers in the past, so I can't call anyone out on hoping to grab a bargain if they want to.
If it's one I really want though, I'm usually in like Flynn.
Like this one and Crazy People and Meteor Man wink
I'm more inclined to wait out a bargain on scores I don't know much about or never knew I wanted until it became so cheap!

Nooooo! That would be a real shame. Really too bad so few copies of both Candy mocies have been sold.

Well you can add another copy in the immediate future, now that my cash flow is improving.
(Still annoyed that there wasn't enough cash to afford Private Life of Sherlock Holmes late last year, but that wasn't Quartet's fault.)

I don't quite get the aversion or dislike for comedy scores in general.
Just listening to this score, the variety of music available is quite amazing.
There's the loveliest of love themes, bristling action motifs, suspense licks and the required broad comedy strokes.
I personally get more bored by some thriller/horror scores that can be more one note/samey.
Some of David Newman's most emotive and lovely themes can be found within his comedy scores.
Granted, I do find parts of Newman's comedy music too overbearing at times, but all the other stuff you get alongside it more than makes up for it.
Even Goldsmith's comedy scores can be stacks of fun (apart from S*P*Y*S and Fierce Creatures wink

I'm thinking of getting this score. BTW, which track on this cd has the saxophone? I really like that part.

That's track 7 called "Laura" which is the sultry theme for Emma Samms character on the soap opera that the late John Candy has a thing for.

Fun score and a fun little movie it was always great to see Candy in a starring role which were few and far between.

Definitely get this score is Eidelman at his best and at his most diverse. This and Crazy People are worthy pick ups.

This thread makes me sad. I love comedy soundtracks, especially those mentioned in the thread.

The thing I LOVE about Delirious is that the score is all over the place (due to the nature of the movie) and I love that about it.

Thanks VeronicaMars! I like the movie and miss John Candy, he seemed like a sweet guy! BTW, Emma Samms was in real soap operas, I think DYNASTY, GENERAL HOSPITAL and THE COLBYS. I've always had a crush on her. Recently she had the coronavirus and has had lingering symptoms for months.

Playing this one again and loving the quality and variety of themes on display.
I wonder though, if the lack of success in sales is not JUST down to it being a dreaded 'comedy score'.
The film itself was a little seen flop.
Also, factor in that Cliff Eidelman, as brilliant as he is, never became a BIG NAME film composer, nor had a run of 'hit films' that might have made his star shine brighter.
After a string of poorly received films, he got pigeon-holed into the chick-flick/rom-com genre which featured lots of songs and broader/comedic scoring.
He didn't manage to consolidate the STAR TREK film association/success onto a string of hit films, ala Horner.
We were lucky that Varese Sarabande liked him so much/had a relationship with him to get us all those score CD's they put out to those type of films (NOW & THEN, SIMPLE TWIST OF FATE etc).
I'll always be sad that he never became one of the 'BIG GUYS' of film scoring.
Such a waste of genuine talent (not that I'd wish for him to be wasting said talent chugging away on the sonic dross of today).

If I had to pick one particular track/cue by Eidelman that I really love then I would pick his track/cue "To Save The Day" that opens the Delirious soundtrack. This track is the best thing he have ever done, love it. He should have done more in the same vein as this track/cue. Did I say I love it because I do.
