Damn, I had to buy this as well, and Stephen is right; that postage is nuts - WTF?!?! Oh well, I'm sure the end product will be worth it.

...speaking as one of those strange souls who adores this grey and ponderous yet magnificent film...

Stephen, this movie has got a lot of stunning concepts that were wedded too quickly with too many "creative advisors" (Shatner a screenwriter?!), yet I think a top-ten all-time score can spackle a lot of cracks and fissures, can't it?

It remains my favorite TREK film, for all its flaws, not only for the magnificent score and FX, but it's the only TREK film that feels like a truly cinematic experience, with a sense of awe and wonder, and its humanist themes echo the TV series much more than the lower budget and far less spectacular films that followed.

Can't wait for this book!

I am delightfully surprised to see other supporters of this much underappreciated movie, I always found it so richly spacey and escapist as I kid, and it made me taste living in space and the romance of those machines and exploration. It is a terrific picture really, and original cut all the way for me BTW.

Sorry, folks, but I'm done shelling out to online retailers that gouge on shipping, which is what Creature Features is doing. The shipping to just north of the Canada/U.S. border is just $5 shy of the book's cover price, and as someone who ships to the U.S. as part of my job, a book this size costs about $8 to ship - including handling charges as well!

I'm sure Preston's book is filled with great material (and TMP is very near and dear to my heart), but for an unlicensed (read non-Pocket) book on Trek, I guess I'll never know.

Shame on you, Creature Features!

Hello, everybody.

I wouldn't dream of trying to persuade someone to make this particular purchase if, for whatever reason, he's not predisposed to do so. Obviously, that's a personal decision which everyone must come to on his own, considering whatever factors he may determine most relevant. All I want to say, for the record, is that this is a TRADE paperback, which is bigger and more substantial than a regular pb. And yes, it's not a hardbound book, but take my word for it, if it were, you probably couldn't lift it.

smile

I think it will be a nice companion piece to Marc Cushman's These Are The Voyages volumes. I'll get it.

Hi everyone -
This is Matthew, writing from Creature Features with a note on shipping.

We understand that the international shipping fee is hefty, but I'd like to clarify the actual costs.

First off, Preston's spectacular book is almost 700 pages. The package will weigh somewhere between 3 and 4 pounds.

I'd urge anyone interested to go to the USPS website and check out shipping prices for themselves. First Class international shipping for a four-pound package is $38.95. Priority shipping is $47.45. Media Mail is not available as an international option.

We're using Priority Mail flat rate padded envelopes, which cost $24.75, the exact amount we're charging for international shipping. We add zero handling charges and zero packaging charges - so we're actually losing money.

The one note is that shipping to Canada is slightly cheaper, but our e-commerce plugin doesn't allow us to differentiate between Canada and the rest of the world. I'm happy to offer actual-cost refunds to any Canadian buyers. However, do note that a four-pound package to Canada would cost $27.75 via First Class or $20.55 via Priority Mail.

If I'm incorrect about any of this, please feel free to contact me directly at creaturefeatures at gmail and I'll address it. Please know that while we regret the high cost of international shipping, it's sadly due to USPS' troubled finances and a spate of recent rate hikes.

Thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm in this thread - we know you'll love the book!
Matthew

It is strange that a 600+ page book would be paperback only.
For another $10 I would happily buy a hardbound version.
A paperback book this large is going to come apart at the binding in short order.

Thanks for chiming in, Matthew. Really appreciate it. And I do realise that a non-private release of a book in this niche (and thus benefiting from bundled shipping) would all but impossible.

But at the end of it all, it just to much money; no. matter who collects it. I guess that's disappointing for both of us.

Dear Zooba,

I don't know if any of you guys have been peeking in or participating at the Trek Discussion Board Lukas linked into his first post above, but here's a quote from a recent post by yours truly, in answer to the same query you just expressed here at our own thread:

QUOTE:

In answer to another question posed above, our book, being an un-official Trek volume, will not be able to carry any photos. It is because of its un-official status, however, that we are free to present an unexpurgated history of ST-TMP’s creation, one which we hope will stimulate and inspire many memorable images in the reader’s mind’s eye.

UNQUOTE.

Dear Ado,

You may be interested, or amused, or both, by the following excerpt from a post by someone calling himself "Kmart":

QUOTE:

Just ordered a second copy, just in case this one suffers from ‘DS9 companion’ syndrome (really thick trade paperbacks don’t usually last very long intact in my household.)

Dear Matthew --

Thanks for chiming in. You might want to check out that Trek Board and see if you don't have some thoughts to share over there, too.

Much obliged,

PNJ

If that is the case how can the cover have a painting of the Enterprise? Does that fall under fair use? Copyright laws are so confusing. (Andy Warhol anyone?!)

Aren't they, though.

FWIW, that beautiful cover, originally intended of course for the CFQ edition, was designed from my idea and executed by the late great and still sadly lamented Roger Stine, who also painted the wonderful wraparound cover some of you may remember from my CFQ story about Hans J. Salter.

Yeah, i just cannot spend $60 plus shipping to make sure I have a solid copy.
The pictures issue is kinda a letdown too, although I know this is all about Paramount licensing stuff and lawyers. Lawyers make the world so boring.

"Strictly limited to 1,000 copies."

Oh. It can't wait. Ordered.

Why is it even limited? With a price tag like this, I'm sure a printing-on-demand option has to be doable..
