It's apparently planned for a festival screening here in Oslo in a couple of months. I've been asked to do some panel moderation in advance of the film.

Cool! Do you have the date and location for this, Thor?

Nope, not yet. In fact, I probably shouldn't have said it yet. smile But it's during the OsloPix festival in June.

My review, upon seeing it in April at the Louisiana Intl. Film Festival: it was wonderful. Not only was it incredibly informative and eye-opening as to the process of what it takes to create music for visual media, but hearing some of those classic themes from Williams, Herrmann, Goldsmith, Horner and others generated the requisite amount of goosebumps as I watched.

The film did a great job in presenting the historical evolution of film scores, but when it got to the present-day, it also reminded me again of how much of today's film scores seem to be made just for sound design and rhythmic repetition; i.e. not having any memorable themes or character motifs.

There are still composers, like Williams and others, who craft great thematic material on a consistent basis. However, it's a shame that many directors these days don't seem to want to have the composers they work with to take that approach.

Nonetheless, I hope that this film will make more people appreciative of the genre and its history (not just people like us), and of what goes into the process of making film music itself. Highly recommended.

Saw it. Wish it was longer wink but a very good documentary! I'm hoping a blu-ray with bonus interviews is planned.

Does anyone know what the last piece of music is in the trailer? It's killing me!

Amazon lists a release date of September 5, 2017 in both DVD and Blu-ray formats, however it appears to be only the documentary on 1 disc, rather than the 2-disc interview set advertised on the SCORE website (which has no release date listed). Anybody know anything more about a release date on the 2-disc set, also whether that set will include the doc as well as the interviews? (I'd rather not spend money on the documentary only to discover later that in order to get the interviews I have to buy the documentary all over again!)

They already have a full version of all the interviews that were done you can buy in video or text format. Check the web site.

My husband and I just watched this on demand. It was wonderful and my very tired husband was riveted from the beginning. I wanted to see more of Thomas Newman and Danny Elfman. I recommend it anyone who has not viewed it.

What do you mean "On Demand"? Can you get it through HBO?

We have HBO but actually paid for it ($5.99) through On Demand. Sorry, should have added this.

Respectfully disagree about your complaint about the lack of historical biography.
There have been numerous docs. on Hollywood Golden Age music and individual composers including Goldsmith , Herrmann, Morricone et.al. *
As a fellow film music journalist and historian I was happy to see the focus from a contemporary perspective.
.The filmakers provided just the right balance.
