Thank you so much for the "Doctor Dolittle" release! I hope next year we have an expanded soundtrack set for "Star!" along with a new blu ray with the intermission restored. I think that would bring all the Fox road shows to blu ray.

Star! would be more complicated on the publishing end because much of the score is arrangements of existing material by different composers, but it definitely would be worth doing.

Dolittle meanwhile, has a stunning underscore by Sandy Courage that runs close to an hour, far longer than a musical typically has. An amazing array of arrangers worked on various cues - Herb Spencer, Arthur Morton, Fred Steiner, Cyril Mockridge, and others, plus Lionel Newman, of course. Basically anyone around at Fox at the time ended up dong something for it.

Which cue was that? And thanks for all of your great work on this -- and other scores.

"A Stormy Sea," which would have come before the final track on CD1.

Thank you very much (to quote Mr. Bricusse) for the answer. Another question -- and this isn't meant to be nit-picking -- but if everything was in the proper order, shouldn't the song "Where Are the Words" be the last thing on CD one, since it was my understanding it was sung on board the ship before they got to Sea Star Island. Was this strictly an editorial decision because of the CD's length? Always remembering of course, that it was supposedly cramming too much stuff on the CDs that resulted in the infamous problems with the otherwise magnificent GOODBYE MR. CHIPS CDs. Wish I could be in London for the DOLITTLE screening; I'm sure it will be magnificent.

Yes, "Where Are the Words" should properly be before the missing "Stormy Sea" and then "The Porpoise / Sea Star Island," but as you can tell the song (now with previously unheard intro) is over 4 minutes long and would have had to be moved to the start of CD2 anyway. If "The Porpoise / Sea Star Island" was placed in between the two songs at the start of CD2, then that disc would have gone over 79 minutes, necessitating the cutting of one of the demos or alternates. It seemed best to start CD2 with two songs and maximize the available space for extras by making that one little move, which is specified in the booklet.

I'm looking forward so much to hearing Alexander's underscore music too. Thanks again Mike for all your work on this one.

It's all stereo except for 3 or 4 cues or bits of cues on disc 2 that were too far gone, and those came from a mono element. And the demos are mono. Mostly this presents a restoration from the original 6-track music elements, including close to an hour of underscore, plus the stereo album masters. Only one cue was completely lost and that's presented with sound effects on the Blu-Ray.

Thanks for this and all your hard work Mike.
Looking forward to getting this one.
Stan

Belated thanks to Mike for answering my "is it stereo" question.

This is a very strong batch of releases by LLL. This was the only one that I thought wasn't essential, but you've made it impossible to resist!

How many tracks are songs? I am not familiar with the film but am tempted by the "conducted by Alfred Newman" portion. I could do without it if it is half or more than half songs though.

Completely unfamiliar with the score and songs. (Other than its signature song) Did the song writers or composer work on Camelot? The rhythm and tempo are very similar.

The conducting was by Lionel Newman, not Alfred Newman.

While Alan Jay Lerner was originally supposed to do the project with Andre Previn, Lerner stalled for nearly a year on it, mostly due to personal problems, and producer Arthur Jacobs sought Leslie Bricusse to do the songs as well as the screenplay. He was coming off of two London & Broadway hits and had already written the Goldfinger lyrics.

There are 14 songs in the score (2 were cut from the release version of the film). As I said previously there is far more scoring for this movie than for a typical musical, at least an hour's worth. Many of the tracks on this release also now have their underscore lead-ins and lead-outs that were not heard on the original album (which was in stores 4 months before the movie was released). It was quite an epic undertaking by Alexander Courage and Lionel Newman, who tapped many other orchestrators for the various songs and scoring, all recorded with the Fox orchestra in peak form.

This is how I wish all musicals were presented on CD. Songs and score. The underscores are usually, if not always wonderful!

Both are equally exciting to me on a score of this time period. But yes you are correct.

I just discovered that this will be available and am thrilled and crazy excited!!! I never expected to see this happen and am just about nuts with anticipation to hear it presented in such an archival way! THANK YOU SO FRICKIN' MUCH! Love this score!

So, here we are blessed with an incredible gift and I'm thinking of other CD releases that would excite me in such a way: SOUTH PACIFIC, PORGY AND BESS, SCROOGE, STAR!. . .

It's never enough is it? smile

THANK YOU AGAIN for the good doctor!

I highly recommend people purchase this CD.

So much work went into restoring and assembling this score and it would be a shame if the fine work wasn't recognized and appreciated. Plus the scoring is wonderful!

Thanks to Nick Redman, Mike Matessino and Neil Bulk for all their hard work and Michael Gerhard and Matt Verboys for releasing it on their label.

I so second these sentiments. And such comments coming from a man who has done so much himself toward restoring and/or re-recording some great scores, is high praise indeed.

Just got my copy today and immediately listened to it. In a word: SPECTACULAR!!!!!

For me, at any rate, 2017 has been a great year for finally getting some long sought holy grails. First, a complete THE GREAT RACE, then this, and then the equally unbelievable Waxman set that includes DR. JEYKLL AND MR. HYDE as well as THE DEVIL DOLL. A year ago I probably would have said than none of these would have ever happened, but now... Let's just say I'm in Heaven. Now, if only someone (I don't care who) could only manage to give the same deluxe treatment to CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (I know -- the masters are all lost -- but I can dream) and SCROOGE (hell, I'd be happy if anyone could just "officially" release the old Columbia album, never mind get the great treatment DOLITTLE got here) then I can "almost" die a happy man.

Once again, a big, hearty THANK YOU to everyone involved out there who made this great release possible.

Nice to see this get some love. Not many years ago this was considered a top holy grail in this neighborhood. It's one of the biggest projects of the '60s, with a roster of big names all working on it at the top of their game and the Fox orchestra in peak form. It was a huge job to restore and assemble and I am very pleased with how it turned out.

I don't think any of you who are involved with the restoration and care of these things will ever know the appreciation! Not always expressed, it is there whenever someone like me literally gasps when it suddenly shows up at Screen Archives (or wherever)! Ever since I was a kid in the 60's, there was a longing for all that wonderful music to be available... now, finally, in my 60's, these gifts are so welcomed and put a smile on my cynical old face. So THANK YOU, a thousand times THANK YOU for this incredible work.

I, for one at least, will be forever grateful and happy at such beautiful fal-der-ral!!!
