It is not just about preferring what The Orville is doing musically. It is also about preferring actual themes and interesting orchestral writing and woodwinds. Discovery doesn't need to be bright and hopeful to be interesting, it needs proper orchestration, counterpoint, and themes. It could be done while still keeping the tone of the music.
So yeah I am not in the least interested in hearing any of the music from Discovery outside the show. It is simply uninspired writing all around.
Another problem is that the music is mixed so low in the show that it wouldn't make much of a difference if Jerry Goldsmith himself had been writing it. That's why I'm curious to hear this release, because maybe there are details in the writing that I wasn't able to get over the sound effects.
I have not seen Star Trek: Discovery because I don't wan't to pay for another streaming service, especially one as limited as CBS All Access. I'm not very hopeful for the music as the music from all the Star trek series was boring except for Ron Jones TNG music and the the occasional track here and there. I do hope Seth MacFarlane will release music from The Orville. It seems that He is very much into the music and it shows. The writing is brilliant and much better than most tv show music, especially sci-fi.
Listened to the first fifteen minutes on Spotify and then turned it off. If anything, the music is even worse divorced from the show because you can hear clearly just how banal it is. I've heard some of Russo's other work and he has talent. It's just a shame that whoever's writing the checks doesn't want music that does more than just fill an aural space.
