recording of "Conan the Barbarian" I bought it too, based on the positive comments posted here. I wasn't familiar with the score beforehand, and after a few listens realised I didn't like it.

Whch begs the question: Don't you people ever watch the films to hear the music? Everyone here seems more album oriented than film oriented.

Another thing, Graham Watt's post about Total Recall and Hollow Man reminds me once more: never trust Jeff Bond's opinion. Instead, see the film first, hear the score, and then come to your own conclusions. Total Recall works quite well within the movie, but as a standalone listen, it's a crashing musical bore.

Wow. This whole thread! Wow!

I'm still waiting to hear what all the fuss was about;
JAWS

I will think in my brain and see if I've fallen for any other of Goblin's tricks!

Actually I bought the expanded score in the late 90s and, while it worked great in the film, as a listening experience left me completely cold. Same with Close Encounters. So I was a bit befuddled by all the excitement for the Intrada/LLL expansions.

There, that'll set some of you off...

I haven't seen that particular film, no. Looks ridiculous to me. I answered the question asked by the OP, are the smart arses just going to diss whatever contributions they don't like?

The worst recommendation is posting in this thread.

Roger Rabbit. wink Okay haven't actually bought that, yet. The blind buying I did was in the 70's thru the early 90's based off composers I had a good track record with. Found some gems, others were huge disappointments.

As far as bad recommendations, I'm in the same camp as Thor. No need to go into anything blindly, there's usually some way of sampling a score, at least an abridge version before taking the plunge. So never actually bought a score based on a recommendation, only to be bewildered and disappointed.

Elmer Bernstein's Heavy Metal. I've never seen the film, but people on here were raving about it, & it was Elmer Bernstein...well I hated it, but it taught me a lesson. Family & friends don't really know what I'd like, so why would strangers on the internet? I listen to the little guy inside my head, he knows.

I did maybe two "blind" buys based upon recommendations of various FSM members. I didn't like them. I learned quickly that "different strokes for different folks" was true. Now I try to see a movie to hear its score before I purchase a score.

The only time a blind buy worked for me was when I purchased Stone's Sundown. Love it, but it was only about three dollars at that time.

Yup, that's it. I'm quite happy to take a chance on a CD that I can buy s/h from Amazon Marketplace for a few pounds, I do that all the time. But ordering a disc from the US to the UK for around £22, then I really need to know that I want it & will like it.

I think the last blind-buy I did was the one that finally killed my compunction for any future blind buys. It was praised to the hilt by James Horner fans.

"The Enemy at the Gates"

Goldsmith's "Planet of the Apes," and "First Blood"

Those are pretty different scores, aren't they? (Granted they can be things you hate in different ways.)

Correct - I don't dislike them for the same reasons, but do dislike them all the same. The two in combination killed the idea of a Goldsmith blind buy for me.

I offer Lionheart and Hoosiers. In the case of the latter this over rated score IMO is severely hampered by the use of synths. Likewise Lionheart - The Epic Symphonic has received far too much praise - again the synths are an issue.
Total Recall bores me as well, hence why I skipped the Quartet release.

Hey now, remember this is a thread about bad recommendations, not just scores you don't like, so in the spirit of things make sure you name names so we can all laugh and point at what horrible, HORRIBLE friends you have who would have the TEMERITY to recommend BASIC INSTINCT.

I remember Jeff Bond referring to HOLLOW MAN as a "doozy" of a score...Jeff does a fine job with liner notes, but as a recommender of latter-period Goldsmith scores? Not so much.

Goldsmith's "Planet of the Apes," and "First Blood"

I absolutely agree on POTA. How anybody can think that is even half decent is beyond me. I know, to each their own and I'm really happy for those who are made happy by hearing that thing, but I do not like that thing.

Well I bought Family Plot mostly because of the hype that it was finally getting released and was not into it at all. For the most part I have gotten some solid scores based on the hype as long as I let the samples decide for me if I should get it. If I can't sample it then I usually skip it.
