Agreed. As I rewatch the show now, I really notice the difference in the score quality after season 1. Kral did of course have some really great moments. But not as top notch as Beck, imo. That is funny, because I think Kral already pulled main duty halfway through season one of Angel. This website blunt instrument about the Buffy/Angel score says the following: ANGEL, SEASON ONE Credited to Robert Kral, who later in the season (from around the 6th episode) became sole composer, although Beck retained joint credit until season 2, and contributed the occasional cue up to the midway point of the season. Only the first episode is credited to Beck alone, and this is featured in the 2005 score CD. ----- I just dont believe this. And if true, Kral must have lost his motivation a little after season 1. Imo Or maybe I just noticed the Beck cues while rewatching season 1 (it`s so easy to recognize his style) and my head fell out a little when the non-Beck cues was used. #biased haha

In my head Beck will always be superior in the Buffyverse. Gosh, if only he still made music like that today. However, as I rewatch Angel now for the first time since it aired I do enjoy Kral's work more and more. He did make some very nice themes (Doyle, Darla, Kate, Fred). I'm no expert, so I dont really know how to explain this, but he often uses loooong notes. Specially in the dramatic scenes. And it is very satisfying to listen to them. Examples would be like the last part of "The Trials For Darla" cue. After the raging version of Angel's heroic theme where all hope is lost. There are some really long dramatic tones. Also in the episode 2x02 "Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been". The whole episode has a very nice sad/lonely (and chill) theme with long notes. (am I making any sense? lol!) I've been listening to the Angel soundtrack a lot lately and I enjoy it more and more. But, not sure if it's just my copy, but I have ripped it in 320kbps into my iTunes. And to me, it sounds like the quality of the audio (specially the suspense stuff) is a bit low? Like it sounds a bit too sharp, or something. Should I rip it in lossless instead? Or is it just how it was produced? If an Angel box set was ever to be released I wouldn't mind if LLL included these tracks to it (like they did with Buffy). Cause they make everything sound so much better! (what's their secret??) Oh and about Kate. From her first episode she has just been an angry and bitter character. I just can't stand those! Yes it was sad with her father and all, but she was angry and bitter even before that happened.

I think you can't quite compare the music on either shows. Rob Kral was more consistent in his score and he also had to serve an entirely different tone as opposed to Christophe Beck, since Angel was more of a brooding superhero Batman-esque type show, while Buffy could be literally anything from week to week. As such the score on Buffy lent itself to being more dynamic. If an Angel box set was ever to be released I wouldn't mind if LLL included these tracks to it (like they did with Buffy). Cause they make everything sound so much better! (what's their secret??) I wouldn't mind that either. An Angel set would have fewer seasons to cover anyway. As long as the excellent score from the Waiting in the Wings episode would make it onto such a set. I love that cue when Angel realizes that Summer Glau is the same ballerina that he saw 100 years ago or when Angel and Cordelia are in Summer Glau's dressing room getting all sexy ("I'm only alive when you're inside me) or when Gunn and Fred kiss for the first time. But anyway, I fear, if it happens, it's gonna be in the very distant future. So I am gonna put my hope back into my backpack. Oh and about Kate. From her first episode she has just been an angry and bitter character. I just can't stand those! Yes it was sad with her father and all, but she was angry and bitter even before that happened. I love Kate. I wish they would have had the opportunity to keep her character on for a longer period of time. Damn Law & Order. I loved that she turned into an antagonist for Angel and in her relentless toughness she was a nice contrast to the other female characters. Generally, I must say those female characters really got the short stick on Angel, they were so many great recurring female characters that would have made great series regulars (Lilah, Kate, Gwen). I am still mad that they killed off Lilah just when they were fleshing her character out with the whole Wesley relationship, she was just getting more multidimensional and bam killed for a cheap thrill twist.

Honestly, when Angel season 5 first aired, I mostly hated it. Because it abandoned the arcs, Cordelia was gone, the budget constraints were particularly visible in the restricted use of location shoots and Spike felt shoehorned in. But nowadays I think it's a fairly great season. It redeemed Spike and it made him fun again, the individual episodes were a lot fun and mixed things up fron the soap opera antics from the years before, generally it was a very creative season that did its best with the budget restrictions they had. Of course Angel season four still looked better and felt more epic, but all in all, season five was a pretty great season. Wasn't it that they couldn't afford Stephanie Romanov for season five and that's why they gave us Eve? I didn't mind Eve, though she was a pale imitation of Lilah, but the actress did her best with the part. Generally, it was a dumb idea to introduce a new W&H character that was so similar to Lilah, they maybe should have gone with a character like Adam Baldwin's Hamilton right away. Poor Sarah Thompson was doomed to be unfairly compared to the far superior Lilah. I never thought the fights on Angel were badly choreographed though. I was actually quite impressed what they were able to pull off with budget cuts, particularly the big Illyria/Spike/Angel/Wesley showdown in Shells was topnotch. (Of course the best choreographed fight sequences remain on TV's Banshee)
