I had a litte chat with my half-compatriot Alexandre Desplat before a special screening in 2015 where he told me a small, hmm, let's say 'secret' about one of his very early scores - before international fame - that I won't reveal!

Oooohh, I hate that! Wonderful that you should meet a high-profile composer before the 'high-profile' bit came along*, but I'd rather you kept that detail to yourself rather than have schmucks like me go 'well, what was it then?' for a long time after.

*probably doing Desplat a disservice there. He was a strong presence in film music even before 2015.

I had the privilege of attending a dinner with musical genius Alessandro Alessandroni prior to his gig at the ICA in London many years ago. The dinner was also attended by Sir Prof Christopher Frayling, Gianna Spagnulo (who sang on many Morricone scores), Laurence Staig (author of 'An Opera of Violence', a fantastic book on Spaghetti Westerns) and others. Sandro really is most courteous and friendly person you could ever wish to meet and he made time for everybody. But my personal highlight was when Gianna introduced herself to me, a mere mortal amongst greats and then added two 'xx' under her signature :-).

On a side note, Jarvis Cocker was sitting at the table next to us but nobody cared about him :-).

Gianna is wonderful! Alex was great company too.

I once got a delightful email reply from a 70s composer - and i was sitting in a hotel foyer at the time. Does that count?

Actually probably not because i knew who he was and he knew i knew who he was - or he wouldnt have been replying to my email. Perhaps i better start another thread - composers who replied by email when you were in a hotel foyer?

Email didnt exist in the seventies.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. Desplat was a top-ranking composer long before 2015 - he began to gain international fame after scoring "The Girl with a Pearl Earring" in 2003 and got his first Oscar nomination in 2007. He was a top Hollywood name - and fresh off his Oscar win - when I met him.

I once had a pint with David Holmes! We didn't talk about film music though...

Fair enough, point taken. It's the 'he told me something fascinating but I'm not telling you' aspect that has me in a funk.

Not in a hotel, but I was a friend of Albert and Shirley Glasser, and had dinner with them in their home and in restaurants during visits years ago.

I sat with some people at a Film Music Society event back in the mid 80's. It turns out at least one was a composer, but I can't recall his name right now.

(Anybody want to figure it out for me? He had recently scored a teen comedy where he got to use JW's theme from JAWS in one sequence, I think in a pool scene. I think his name was Italian-ish and long.)

I remember a dumb scene where someone tossed a candy bar in the pool and it looked like a "turd" floating in the water and the Jaws theme played as everyone freaked out and exited the pool. Does that help?

Closest I got was emailing Bear McCreary a few times before he became so famous from BSG he couldn't personally answer emails anymore. At least I don't think he does anymore.

I had dinner with Tom Holkenborg in the early 90's. He was playing with his NERVE project at the local club and i was the promoter for the night.

We went to an italian restaurant that completely f**ked up the orders and took ages to serve. When the food came it was about 30 minutes before showtime and we ate so fast (pasta!) that we almost exploded. I remember Tom saying "we may not be rocking, but will DEFINITELY be rolling tonight" after dinner.

Nice chap!

Best,
Burnie

P.S. NOTHING, i mean NOTHING beats Josh's taking Fabio Frizzi to the Zoo :-))))

I've updated it:

I went to a movie that JunkieXL completely f**ked up the score on and took ages to listen to.
