Disappointing, yes. But, there is a wealth of material here besides the original performance. The final word on this legendary rejected work. Thank you Intrada! PS: Disappointing in that, After most of the hype ensued, Doug Fake, made a statement assuring all that SPARTACUS and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA were not the answer. From there the realization that 2001 has happening instead seemed inevitable. There basically is no new material, but rather the genuine, legendary article and this score is far from terrible, just the opposite and, no offense to Jerry Goldsmith, no re-recording can come close to the maestro North's own supervised performance. Thus I ordered this almost instantly and everyone else should too.

The original tapes??? The same original tapes only Jerry was allowed to hear? Key-ryst! I'm there.

Incredible that film music fans could find this release remotely disappointing! I'd put it on par with the terrific CD of Goldsmith's CAPRICORN ONE film tracks as perhaps their most important release, considering the difficulty they must have had getting everything signed off on to get both projects done. Hats off to everyone at Intrada for making some more film music history here! SCOTT

Alex Norths music for 2001 is TERRIBLE. I can understand why Kubrick did not use it.

Interesting that this news should be announced on the same day that I received the latest contract renewal paperwork for my lending of my 2001 spacesuit (I own one of the last couple in existence; the others were destroyed shortly after photography on the film was completed) to the Deutsches Filmmmuseum in Frankfurt, Germany, for its traveling Stanley Kubrick exhibition (I also lent them some swords from SPARTACUS). Included in the packet from the museum are photos from the exhibition's most recent stop at the Caermersklooster in Ghent, Belgium. As you can imagine, anything and everything related to 2001 is a must-buy for me.

Alex North[']s music for 2001 is TERRIBLE. I can understand why Kubrick did not use it. It's wonderful music, but quite different from what's in the film, and it makes the movie a very different movie, indeed. What I sense here isn't someone who actually believes the music terrible, but it slow, or incapable of adjusting to anything outside what's already set in his mind as the "normal order" of things.
