Has anyone picked this up? I read on another website that one of the tracks is not included.

On another edition of this there is a cut called "Jonalah" which is not listed on this CD.

This selection was part of the Chico (vol 2) LP. It was not on the soundtrack album (red & white Cover)

One or two of us may actually like Chico Hamilton. One or two of us may ask why it was omitted.

I like Chico too. Not sure if it was on the Vol 2 Decca LP (B&W cover). Need to research.

JONALAH was included on a Brunswick 45rpm extended play (2 45rpms were issued, vol 1 & 2) in the UK. Still not sure if it was included on any of the USA Decca LPs.

Looks like it was included on the US LP:

Tracklist .

A1 Goodbye Baby
A2 Cheek To Chico
A3 Susan (The Sage)
A4 Sidney's Theme
A5 Jonalah
A6 Jam
A7 Night Beat
B Concerto Of Jazz Themes From The Soundtrack Of »Sweet Smell Of Success«

Oddly, Wikipedia DOES NOT include Jonalah in the LP program listing:

I will compare the Sweet Smell of Success version of this tune to the version on Chico Hamilton in Hi Fi. I wonder if the Decca soundtrack used the Pacific Jazz recording.

They are two different recordings, so it should not have been a licensing issue.

Given the track omission, I think I will skip the new version. I will be interested to hear from anyone who owns both versions, though, regarding sound quality comparison.

It would be ironic if this legitimate release was sourced from LPs like all the others, because of burned up tapes at Universal Music Group.

I suppose that it's a good sign that the Amazon blurb says that this is "re-mastered and mixed." I don't imagine you can remix anything from an LP transfer.

Sound is excellent, from the original tape masters. Certainly not an LP "rip" like all the various boots.

I'm listening to the new Verve/Decca/Universal release (they're all credited on the back) right now and it sounds great. Without having done a direct comparison yet, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's a significant improvement over the unmentionable. I'm very glad I got this.

El/Cherry Red is perfectly legit. Nothing "unmentionable" about it.

Plus, it has that extra track that is not on the Verve release. No reason for Verve to leave it off.

When I clicked on the Amazon link, I noticed, among the Recommended other CDs, "SPARTACUS - Fred Astaire." Now, that ought to be a real collector's item.

I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not prepared to state definitively whether the previous SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS is or it isn't a boot. I suspect it is. Many of the US labels consider El/Cherry Red to be bootleggers, though, and that's good enough for me. In fact, I believe the guy who owns this site thinks they're bootleggers (correct me if I'm wrong, Lukas). And their sketchy releases made from LPs sometimes prevent or delay the official appearance of material from better sources. So, please keep on defending them, loud and long, and cling to your El/Cherry Red edition.

I, meanwhile, will be enjoying my new official release of this music in much improved sound with only the tiniest smidgen of regret that one source track has been left off.

Cherry Red is *not* a bootleg label

I really don't know how people get that information. It's not because a label is outside the US that people have to start ignoring or banning their releases.

See, even the latest CD release of one of the most well known English punk bands has just been released on Cherry Red:

El Cherry records are not legit. What does the copyright if any, if say. what are the source materials. Who did they license from? Where were the cd manufactured?

Él/Cherry Red Records ACMEM132CD  not Cherry records

Many people believe the earth is flat, and that's good enough for me.

In fact, I believe the guy who owns this site thinks they're bootleggers (correct me if I'm wrong, Lukas).

Thinking critically, the LAST person who is going to convince me of a label's illegitimacy will be the owner of a competing label, who obviously stands to gain if his customers have that perception. It's like believing the results of a climate change study funded by oil companies.

I, meanwhile, will be enjoying my new official release of this music in much improved sound with only the tiniest smidgen of regret that one source track has been left off.

It is my favorite track on the Chico Hamilton album, so...
