I think I saw over at MusicFromTheMovies.com that there's going to be a promo release very soon of both BILL & TED scores.Thor - Did you ever see THE PHANTOM 2020 or whatever it was called? It was an animated series that debuted the same year the movie came out I believe. It took place in the future (obviously), but I didn't like it as much as I did the movie. Scott Valentine (FAMILY TIES) did the voice of the Phantom.

JINGLE ALL THE WAYis, hands down, Newman's best score. My other favorite scores he has done are TOMMY BOY THE SANDLOT THE MIGHTY DUCKS THE PHANTOM As far as what else there is of Newman that I like... that would consist of everything he has done that I've heard.

TOMMY BOY!! I completely forgot about that one. That's a nice little score (I enjoyed the film, too). I guess I need to get out there and start buying more Newman CDs. I really got interested in him after GALAXY QUEST.

No, I didn't see that show, Spacehunter. Sounds kinda dorky, though. Even more campy than the film, I gather. THE PHANTOM shouldn't be about the future. It's all about the past (and the 400 years the various Phantoms have been around; the various "time capsules" their adventures have displayed etc.).Thanks for letting me know that such a thing exists, though.

I also forgot about Tommy Boy. What a fun score, especially the big band kinda stuff, when the 2 guys reach Chicago and the lovely end sequence when Tommy Boy saves the factory. Uplifting and moving.Another one I forgot : Honeymoon In Vegas Newman wrote a last minute replacement for a rejected Marc Shaiman score. The movie was temp tracked with Bernstein`s The Grifters. Very interesting how Newman gives musical references to The Grifters but still manages to give the score his "handwriting". Especially the big band stuff when the "flying Elvises" land on the hotel is great. And last but not least That Night An almost dream like very melodic score with a lot of delicate synth passages. NP Jingle All The Way (another one I forgot)

Sorry to sound like an echo, but my vote for the best is THE PHANTOM, a fabulous, colourful and energetic score from the estimable David Newman, who is easily one of the best composers in the business (I wish he would do more high-profile blockbusters to save us from the likes of the dread Zimmer & Co). I went to see THE PHANTOM with a friend of mine who is not a particular film score buff. He went completely APE about the music and borrowed my CD so often that in the end I had to buy him his own copy! Fun movie by the way, with lots of charm - shame it bombed at the box office (I can only assume we even got a soundtrack release because it was recorded in London, and performed stunningly I might add by The London Metropolitan Orchestra). The CD is superb - Newman's irresistible themes are beautifully represented in a perfectly sequenced 40 min listen.

I only have a few David Newman scores, and I wouldn't consider myself a "fan" exactly, but he is inching his way up the list to where I'd put him firmly in of the second tier of active composers. Some of his stuff is beginning to sound the same, though, and I'm getting really tired of that two note piano motif that keeps popping up in his scores. My favorite score of his is probably Meet Joe Black. It's basically an homage to Herrmann, and it has a gorgeous main theme. The Shawshank Redemption is nice too and has its moments. For pure fun, however, I love Other Peoples' Money (I wish this movie was out on DVD!).

Justin -you've got David confused with his brother Thomas. Both are highly talented of course (Thomas Newman's MEET JOE BLACK is lovely I agree).

Well, I received GALAXY QUEST two days ago, but I've only just got round to playing it (I've had a lot of CDs arrive this week). So far I'm only a third of the way through it, but I like it a lot.NP: GALAXY QUEST (David Newman)

DOH! It's tough to keep track of all these different Newmans! David Newman did do Other Peoples Money, though, right? If so, that's my favorite score of his.

Hi Justin,Oher People`s Money is indeed by David Newman and I agree, it`s one of his best scores. A very elegant and bold main theme. A very enjoyable Norman Jewison movie as well by the way.

Ok, I got three for ya DNRules. Only saw one of these mentioned once so here goes...The Kindred....great lullaby, ferocious monster scoring, travelling music which is a very close cousing to Poledouris' ROBOCOP...I wish this would get issued on CD. My Demon Lover....mostly electronics more akin to bro Thomas works', the orchestra kicks in during the lengthy finale. Fun album, nice love theme. Critters...Intrada did a great job on this one, and although it helps the film, it isn't the best listen apart from it. I still like it though.... Hopefully sometime in 2525, Varese will maybe issue 2 on 1 cd's from the past archives...Kindred and Demon Lover would fit quite nicely together. NP:The Great Escape(Bernstein)Arabian nights just ended http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/smile.gif"> This is up next. Sean

My favorite David Newman score still needs an offical release--FIREBIRDS. This pulse-pounding effort for the Nicholas Cage/Tommy Lee Jones "Topgun for Heliocopters" epic always raises my heartrate and remains, for me, one of the best syth-orchestra hybrids this side of Goldsmith at his best. It's also a perfect example of a great score for an incredibly dumb movie--(which I still watch whenever it's on for the great aerial sequences and Newman's terrific score.) Number two would be MATILDA After that, SANDLOT, PARADISE, and BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER get my votes for runners-up. GALAXY QUEST is also in the top 6. Somebody give this guy a high profile assignment! He's right up there with Bruce Broughton and Joel McNeely as the most under-rated, under-employed composers in Hollywood. 10 years from now the Newman Brothers, Broughton, and McNeely will be doing the scores that go to Williams and Goldsmith--unless the Media Ventures syndrome overtakes us all.
