I'm no big fan of Jerry Gokdsmith's basketball-beat scores. Gawd, he was doing that in everything from GREMLINS 2 to EXTREME PREJUDICE for a couple of years. But I was surprised how much I liked some of this score (thanks, Mutant!). Some of it does show Jerry at his ponderous and bland worst, but at other parts the music really comes alive. In the earlier clips I love how the bluesy tonalities are used, and the piano there actually sounds like a jazz musician at work, rather than the lilting simplicity of many of Goldsmith's piano chords from around that time (actually, you can hear that even in this score, but the good bits are nearly great). So I'm giving it thumbs up!

If nothing else, this score is a landmark for being the last drum-machine/Yamaha blowout of Goldsmith's career. At the time, he was trying to put accoustic instruments back at the center of his music, and he probably wasn't thrilled about revisiting his synth-heavy late 80's style.

I thought the finale was scored fairly well. The heroic music doesn't really start until the Twin Peaks kid starts kicking ass. Lord, what a silly movie.

I hated that percussion in Hoosiers the first time I listened and then I thought 'Wait--it's actually the sound of a basketball hitting the floor. That's pretty ingenious!' But the sound just makes me wince most of the time--it does not date well. I've definitely grown to enjoy Hoosiers but that's the exception that proves the rule for me...

the fights in this movie look like cartoons! (maybe Goldsmith thought the same)

Well, if this represents Jerry Goldsmith at his least effective, then he truly was the best film composer by a wide margin.

In point of fact, these clips show--once again--that Jerry Goldsmith was an incredible dramatist and craftsman. His score gives the film its heart, energy, and flair, plus glues edits and scenes together seamlessly. Additionally, from what the clips indicate, Jerry spotted the film and action quite nicely, knowing when music would be useful and when silence would be better.

I also love the music qua music.

Way to go, Jerry; thumbs up!

I actually think some of Goldsmith's pieces in this score are quite funky!
the percussion and the orchestra, it sort of feels like a late 70s, early 80s cop show for that chase scene music!

Maybe Goldsmith was on autopilot for this score, he must have had lots of other scores that were more priority probably.

I actually enjoyed the music in the clips featured in the original post.

I will definitely buy the soundtrack when it will be released. (Please Varese or whoever will or can release it)

Same here. A fun-sounding score, Goldsmith again providing music better than the film deserved.

Or maybe you just have the stupidest ears by a wide margin. Who can tell?

As a matter of fact, I can tell you that I actually don't have stupid ears--since ears are not the source of I.Q.

Hope I didn't just blow either your ears or your mind with that revelation.

I've been working on restoring Jerry's score in these clips from the forgotten 1992 boxing film "Gladiator" (Cuba Gooding Jr., Brian Dennehy) It's kind of a cheesy flick.
Goldsmith's rousing score was replaced by a darker, more reserved one by Brad Fiedel. Goldsmith held on to the central theme, for the character of Tommy, and used it the next year in a more tragic mode for "The Vanishing"

Since the videos have been deleted is there any chance or other way you can repost 'em? I've really been enjoying the Intrada album these past few days. And would love to hear Goldsmith's score in the context of the movie.

I still have them all. I'll try to post them on dailymotion, but I won't be back home for another month.

I'll update this thread if it works.

Sigh.... I miss my old YouTube channel...

I liked how it goes with the scene, but Goldsmith's score was too good for this movie. It made that round more exciting and dynamic than it actually was, imo. Proving Goldsmith was scoring more than just the boxing match, imho. I haven't seen this movie in years so I can't remember Fiedel's score to compare.

I thought "Repayment" worked nicely towards the end and during the fade out. Goldsmith's music in that moment gave an uneasy feeling of victory and greed with that lustful look on Dennehy's character's face.
