The first composer I met was Basil Poledouris. I met him in Royal Albert Hall, London before the John Barry concert in 1998. The day before I went to the film music store "Rare Discs" in London, where I met the agent Richard Kraft. He told me, that Mr. Poledouris would be there for the concert, so I went to HMV and bought Wind and The Hunt for Red October, whitch I got signed. Mr. Kraft did also tell me, that I was almost impossible to meet John barry, but he took my CDs to the hotel, where they were signed by him. The next day I could pick them up in the reception. The next composer I met was Jerry Goldsmith. I went to London in 1999 for a concert. I went to Barbican Hall in the morning, and I was allowed to be there at the rehersals with LSO. GREAT!!! In the evening I got my CDs signed after the "public" concert. In 1999 I went to London again for a concert with Carl Davis and Georges Fenton. After the concert I went "backstage" and got my autographs and photos. I did also meet Sir Richard Attenborough. In 2000 I went to Ghent for the Hans Zimmer concert. Unfortunately I didn't meet him, but the following day there was an arrangement where film composers and related persons were telling about their jobs. Luch was included, and Lisa Gerrard, Patrick Doyle, the director Regis Wagener and the actor Michael York were sitting at the very same table next to me! Furthermore I met Elia Cmiral, Elliot Goldenthal and John Powell. It is really cool to meet these people.

I have met up with Trevor Rabin on several occassions during his days in the rock band Yes(and on his last solo tour). He is a sweet person. Very gracious of his time and always willing to sign autographs for and take pictures with people. So talanted yet so humble and modest. Something so rarely seen in the Hollywood community.

I've met several composers in person who have personally signed CDs - Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Bruce Broughton, Michael Kamen, Randy Newman, Howard Shore, Rachel Portman, Colin Towns, Christopher Gunning, Debbie Wiseman. I've received letters/autographs through the post (or from behind closed doors at concerts) from Ennio Morricone, Christopher Young, Cliff Eidelman, Basil Poledouris, John Williams, Bill Conti, Stewart Copeland, Ron Jones. I hope I didn't leave anybody out! ;-) John

I certainly don't wish to spoil the fun, but often requests for signed pictures are handled by personal assistants, from a prepared pile of signed photos. I met Barry twice, once at his concert and then again at HMV. In the former event, because it was invite only, he was very approachable and willing to chat. But at HMV, an arranged meet and greet, he was much less comfortable. A handshake, a signature, a brief salutation, and next please! I understand that Barry reads ALL his fan mail but replies to none of it. Cheers.

I forgot to add ... At the after-concert party of Debbie Wiseman's 2001 concert, I had lengthy, friendly conversation with Don Black and Debbie Wiseman. She was really sweet. I'd interviewed here before and we really enjoyed it. She even telephoned me at work the week after the concert to ask if she could borrow the photographs I took that night. A lovely lady. Cheers.

The only other composer I've dealt with is David Arnold. I did two arranged interviews with him, so it was kind of formal but he was nice enough to have remembered me from one to the next. He sent me tapes of Baby Boy, Shaft and Zoolander. Cheers.

I met Albert Glasser during the 60's, and enjoyed a long and enjoyable friendship with him that lasted until his death. I also corresponded with Ferde Grofe and Ronald Stein.

I spoke with Kamen via email on a couple of occasions. I had the chance to chat with American minimalist composer John Adams after a concert in Detroit. A wonderful, articulate, extremely intelligent man. We spoke about film scoring for a while. He'd just finished writing music for a documentary.

I could never resist going backstage or writing a fan letter. The composers I have met include Bruce Broughton Aaron Copland David Raksin Elmer Bernstein George Duning Herschel Burke-Gilbert Jerry Goldsmith John Williams Lalo Schifrin Henry Mancini Christopher Young I have also written more that my share of fan letters. One of my first was to Ernerst Gold after hearing his score to EXODUS. He sent me a copy of his then new LP from SHIP OF FOOLS. I also have received replies from Bernstein, Goldsmith, Williams, Delerue (in French) Rozsa (many), Tiomkin, Newman (pater), Duning and Broughton (who kindly sent me a copy of BABY'S DAY OUT on CD). No luck with Herrmann, Barry or Morricone however. ;-) Probably my favorite experience was speaking to Max Steiner on the telephone (thanks to a mutual friend). True to form, Steiner was prone to make a joke and deflect any comments on his music. My friend and I had just finished watching a good print of VIRGINIA CITY if I recall. This was in the mid-1960's, and so Max was just into his 'retirement' at that time.
