To make this an even muddier discussion, and forgive me if I've missed it discussed here (I re-read a couple of times): Are the Sony 2CD reissues the same in quality as the RCA 2CD issues? It seems to me I heard they were just using the same masters but I'm not sure if my memory on this is correct.

They are the same.

How can it be that there are such big differences in the sound quality? One would expect that for later (re-)releases, especially when they contain the same music, the quality should be at least as good as the previous release instead of being inferior. What's the reason for why my rca 2-CD set of return of the jedi sounds worse than the material from that much older 4-CD box set? Was the master deteriorated? What's the story?

It's an old Jedi mind trick.

Ha! Those tricks only work on the weak minded. But it's nice to know those aren't the masters you're looking for. Move along.

So Spike TV has been playing "A New Hope" all day. (I know... big surprise, right?)

But anyway, I had it on in the background while I did some phone business. I was only barely aware of it. It had been so long since I even sat through the Special Edition that I was caught completely unprepared for THAT HORRIBLE EDIT jammed into the End Titles. I laughed out loud when it happened. I had completely forgotten about it all this time.

Who the Devil was responsible for it? It sounds like it was done by a 10-year-old (and I intend no disrespect to 10-year-olds). I am UTTERLY AMAZED that it was released that way.

Seriously? There was no other way to accommodate the longer credits? I wouldn't have minded if the scroll had been faster as long as the music was left untampered (but, I'm suddenly aware that I'm talking about the "Special Editions" here, so...).

Oy vey!

Thank heavens the change wasn't included in the RCA CD editions!

wow, that's one heck of a read. thanks for sharing.

There's a pretty good and informed analysis/discussion about this on pages 15–20 of this long article: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Lot/9045/starwars.pdf.

Sadly Geocities has gone, does anyone still have this PDF and could email it to me?

Thanks

[EDIT] BTW I thought some of the reason for the differences with Jedi was that the masters got lost after they were sent to NPR for use in the Jedi Radio Drama, so they used an inferior source for the 2CD set

Consider yourself lucky - I would have thought the end credits would have gotten blared over with a "TOMORROW NIGHT ON SPIKE TV: COPS MARATHON!!!!" or some such commercial.

It's been a long time since I watched Star Wars - what kind of editing did they do to prolong the sequence?

The music was edited to accompany the extra credits for the "Special Edition" team.

Geocities is gone, but here's something just as good!

For the intrepid among you who want to experience the wonder for yourselves...

Using the DVD, the cuts occur at 2:01:22 and 2:02:03 in the film's running time. The pasted-in extensions yield an additional 40 seconds (I'm not accounting for any pitch differences between the CD and the film in this total, so the 40 seconds is approximate).

You know, I can see them HAVING to do this for the theatrical presentations. But for the home video versions there was nothing wrong with them speeding up the crawl and leaving the music alone, as I said earlier. At home one can always easily slow down or pause the credits for more careful reading.

(Hmm. Maybe this can be fixed for Lucas' next trip to the well.)

They could always put in "Love Theme from Star Wars" after the end of "Theme from Star Wars" . . . you know, like they did in "Superman."

You're welcome!

It is SO quite the read that I burned off a hardcopy and put it in page protectors-it's a very handy reference!
