I'm sure it helped that I was usually in the movie aisle of a store, so I was probably among like-minded individuals, or at least those who would be appreciative of the selection. (I'm amused by your need to question me, though.)

I don't have a ring tone set on my phone, but if I was going to, I'd probably try to grab something strange from a Goldsmith score, like those guttural voices from DAMIEN: OMEN II.

I have the Main Title from THE FRENCH CONNECTION. The sudden explosion of brass is arresting.

Mine changes frequently as some are too quiet to be heard in a crowded place, but I've currently settleled on OHMSS OST version and Man fron Uncle season 2 end title for when we are at home as its nice and subtle.
I have an edit from James Bond in Japan (as Bond is shot out of the torpedo tube) for txts and mail.

Have Kellys Heros main title for my 13 year old stepson as its his favourite film!

I also used to have "The Raiders March", then last year when I got a new phone I decided to have a little fun. There's that really fantastic, brassy, French Horn fanfare statement of the Rohan theme about 6 or 7 minutes into the "Lighting the Beacons" cue on the ROTK complete recordings - you know, that really kick-ass part where Theoden proclaims, "...and Rohan shall answer!" (tee-hee!). Anyway, long story short, I pulled that out of the track, looped it once, and downloaded it to my phone.

People hear it, and love it, and just know it's from a movie...but they can never place it!

Right now, I just have one of the regular ringtones that came with the phone. I've never really had a film music ringtone earlier either. I had the opening brass riff of Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party" once, which - given the Elfman connection - is probably the closest I've been.

By the way, here are a couple of earlier threads on this topic:

Twisted Nerve - it freaks out one of the girls in the office every time.

For the incoming message alert, I'm currently using the SNCF announcement jingle, of which I became very fond whilst in Paris last year.

Usually it's Yakety Sax (Benny Hill version), and sometimes it's William Shatner yelling "PICK UP THE PHONE!" But I often go back to my favorite, THE PRICE IS RIGHT. When that theme starts, you'd be amazed at how many people instinctively leap to their feet and want to run down the aisles.
