Great piece, even though I can just imagine the bashers taking quite issues with some of it (heard a bit of STII in there for sure, and a couple other things)

No, here's the key quote:

'It was the first time in a very long while that I could do what I want, I didn't have a director dictating the paramaters....'

He says this sort of thing from time to time, I think as a coded message that he can't get past the temp-love people, and it's frustrating for him. He is a GOOD composer, but his very success in the climate today means he can't do what he wants. Directors now hire composers as technicians in the same way you might hire a builder to build an extension on your house: you decide the structure, and he builds it because you can't, but it's your design. No-one risks the full composer any more, just hires the technician skills.

I welcome him getting projects where he can really do his own stuff. You need to realise that the 'Horner-bashing' is only a front for mainstream industry-bashing.

He's presenting the flying as a metaphor for the freedom he really wants. Whether that's true or not, it's a good indicator of his real intent and I hope he gets that freedom more and more.

Well put post, and it's a beautiful Horner piece. I love the footage near the end of him speaking to the orchestra, remarking on how special this piece is to him (and earlier, that he hopes the musicians won't treat it as just another "gig" - for what it's worth, it's a crisp, beautiful performance out of them as well) and commenting on the piano lines - that there's "no key", just constant, ethereal motion. He seems to love this kind of writing - there's a bit of "Troy" where he commented he loved the effect of the listener not able to grasp the tonic, just constant shifts through modulations and you "can't tell where home [key] is", and I think his fascination with Irish music relates to this as well.

The comment about Horner doing "flying" well is also true - of course, some great stuff in "The Rocketeer" and "Once Upon A Forest" relating to flying, and I'm thinking of the beautiful cue "Flying" in "Man Without A Face", a highlight cue of the whole film for me.

Absolutely brilliant music! I hope this is available to download with just the music as well as with the visuals.

Fantastic!

Nice find! I like the piece, too. I sometimes wonder, what is it that makes a piece of music, itself abstract, somehow sound like flying (or, in other cases, like the sea, etc.). Is it association with music we've heard before? Do the sustained notes surging higher on the scale just translate into images of soaring? Whatever, I enjoyed this.

Great Stuff! And no wonder he did such a terrific job on ROCKET MAN.

The video I linked above will be available in a special download package for purchase on the ASB website store.

It will include a 12-minute video segment of the full piece of music (most likely synced to HD video of the actual Horsemen routine), a 4-minute video tribute called 'The Fourth Horsemen', which was created by The Horsemen to serve as inspiration for him - it consists of several vintage film reels and newer footage of planes, stunts and pilots; The full piece of music will also be available as a stand-alone music file as well.

All videos are 720p.

Awsome!!! big grin

How much Music has James Horner wrote for the Horsemen show in total? 12 Minutes?

Would or could you release the Music on CD and the videos on DVD? Would that make sense for you?

Thanks so much for sharing.

I already have such a admiration for Horner and his work and now it's grown 100 times more.

I actually admire anyone who can go up in those planes and do all the aerobatics. I'd be puking my guts out.

Takes a lot of courage and Horner rises to the occasion. The music is powerful and passionate.

Amazing stuff.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Maestro and now it seems, Commander as well!

Surely hope there will be a release of this awesome music.

. . . notice that funny blue scarf, but also a baseball cap - that cap is one of the official Horsemen hats worn by the team . . .

Finally, an explanation for the mysterious Horner scarf!

Great Stuff! And no wonder he did such a terrific job on ROCKET MAN.

Krull's "Ride of the Fire Mares" was a great "flying" one.

Ba-dom ba-dom ba-dom-DOMM!

Magnificent.smile

The main draw for me here was to see Horner in a new environment, doing a cool hobby, but I forgot to comment on the music! smile Personally, I felt a little underwhelmed by it, perhaps because it lacks a pronounced melody; it basically just floats up and down on the chord scale (which I guess is in line with his statement on the music "flowing freely"). But I'd rather take his film music approaches to the concept instead; ROCKETEER, KRULL, APOLLO 13 and so on.

However, it's interesting to note that this is, in a way, a semi-concert piece by Horner, who has basically shunned that environment since the 70's.

This was great! Especially the music! He should definitely start focusing on concert work.

ROCKETMAN?--Yes, the home for demented film music fans beckons. ROCKET_EER. Still a Horner favorite for me.

I need to make a correction:

It turns out that the additional four-minute video "The Fourth Horsemen" is actually for a second piece of music James Horner had written, and the music from that video will be available as a stand-alone as well,

So it's a positive correction!

The content will include:

-The video "Write Your Soul"

-The 12-minute video for the Horsemen flying piece

-The 4-minute video for 'The Fourth Horsemen" piece

-The stand-alone 12-minute piece

-The stand-alone 4-minute piece

This is more exciting than the new Intrada, FSM and Varese releases by a mile. The video makes you want to take up flying. Can't wait to purchase these.
