Thank god for Lalaland and their new edition. It's strange but the Varese edition really does sound like half the soundfield is missing. ..... or three guys perform the score from Die Hard and just change instruments really fast!
OK, here’s the track listing. Where is the cue “John & Holly/The Van”? It should have been the track n. 2 but I am not able to find it … Please do not tell me it’s missing!!! Also what a pity for the “*mono source”…

I'm guessing "John & Holly/The Van" is probably at the beginning of "The Terrorists' Entrance".
Also, (and not really caring if it's mono source), did I correctly read that we're FINALLY going to have the short little Main Title with the sleigh bells?
I'm guessing "John & Holly/The Van" is probably at the beginning of "The Terrorists' Entrance" ...
I am sure it is not there: unfortunately the “terrorist entrance” track is exactly the same as in the bootleg (4’00’’ Vs 4’05’’), which contains the “singing on the rain theme”. This last theme has been cut on the Varèse CD – as in the movie – and the cue plays for 3'40'...
The complete “John & Holly / The Van” cue runs exactly for 1’06’’. But this last track, although brutally crossfaded, is included on the Varèse CD. So… ? Lost tapes? Or what?
I'm really anxious because it was a beautiful track...
I have a feeling we'll NEVER have a definitive Die Hard. I don't understand why this is such a problem.
I'm pretty sure LLL was working on this project for at least two years, if not longer, and that they've exhausted all the research and resources that they could to make this project the best that it can be.
Sadly, there's scores from even the late 80s and 90s that do not exist anymore, or the first generation tapes no longer exist, or their tapes weren't properly archived; such is the case with Brave Little Toaster, Batman (1989), and Bad Boys.
"John & Holly/The Van" seems to be misplaced and mislabled (as on the varese) after "Emptying the Vault" (The Vault"on the new LaLaLand). It's called "Message to Holly" here. There's no slate number for this cue but given the running time and also the structure of the cue I'm pretty sure it belongs where you can hear it in the movie. We'll just have to wait and hear what's actually on there and if anything's still missing...
Agreed, we won't actually know until we have the CDs.
But I was looking at "Message For Holly" and I was originally thinking that was the cue where John's telling Al to tell Holly that he was sorry. But I could be wrong. We'll see.
This is also the problem when scores get chopped up, re-arranged, tracked, etc., and I know this one definitely got spliced and diced.
Personally, I'm one of those people that really prefers the score as heard in the film, but that's just me.
The actual "Message for Holly" cue seems to be labled as "Film Version" on the new LaLa set. So it looks like they just misplaced the "John & Holly Meet/The Van" cue.
As musicfan723 says, “Message for Holly” (2'46') should correspond to “John’s Confession”(2’49’’); I mean it should be a different cue, although there are two versions of it, on the La-La Land set…
Of course I really hope Mink is right, but it would be strange…
Don't worry ;-) I'm pretty sure that "Message for Holly (Film Version)" is the cue I titled "John's Confession" and the "original" "Message for Holly" is "John & Holly Meet/The Van".
Anyone know offhand how much of this music was tracked onto the second and third films? I watched Die Hard 2 the other week and I thought I spotted a few tracked cues, but the music was mixed so low it was hard to tell. Kamen's music for II was bolder and more in your face, so I dunno…
I asked MV and he just said that "John & Holly" is "Message for Holly". He didn't specify film version, so yeah, I'm guessing that the film version of Message/Holly is John's Confession. Sounds good to me!
