No, the LP did not have dialogue. The Rykodisc CD inserted those.

There are no sound effects. Where one appeared originally, covered music has been reconstituted.

"Dat's what I said - reconstitutioned!"

Ray, could you perhaps tell us how La La Land's release will differ from this release by Kritzerland:

http://www.kritzerland.com/mad.htm

Does the "LP disc" feature dialogue?

The original vinyl LP contained tracks of dialogue interspersed between music tracks.

The Kritzerland pressing is from the master tapes used for the album, which was a re-recording of the score specifically made for the album. The dialogue tracks were not included on this CD. Bonus film cues include sound effects from the movie soundtracks.

The LLL discs are from the original six-track composite soundtrack, so this music is not the re-recording, but the cues as they are heard in the film, sans sound effects (save one, apparently).

Someone has probably done an analysis of the film cues vs. the album cues and can explain the differences (arrangements, instrumentation). I imagine it's a bit like the album version of The Great Escape, for example, versus the final Intrada release using the film tracks.

Excellent explanation - I was also confused.

Mild.

The soundtrack disc - No dialogue. The Overture, Ent'racte and Exit music are Stereo. Everything else is mono.

The LP disc - full stereo.

If you're a fan of this score....it's as good as it will ever get!!

Brilliant Ray. Great job and THANKS A BUNCH! Means a LOT to me, to ALL of us you doing this. Keep up the good work and many blessings!

I stand corrected. So they (Ryko) did. (I knew someone had and it's been easily 20 years since I played the album.)

And I misread your description of the sound effect; I was under the impression it remained. My apologies.

I have edited my original comments accordingly.

Well, this is... interesting.

Just to clarify: The Kritzerland release is the re-recording, this LLL release is the score as heard in the film. Correct?

Technically, yes. Bearing in mind the "re-recording" was probably done at roughly the same time as the film cues, also by Ernest Gold, and probably with the same orchestra. It's not a re-recording in the way that Stromberg, Raine, or Debney have been re-recording scores.

I see! Thanks for the information. I didn't pick up the Kritzerland release, but I suppose I'll give it another chance when LLL posts up their sound samples.

Always great to have things made available again! smile

I wish I would have known about this release about a week ago as I just got back the Kritzerland release signed by the Winters. Maybe I'll search out Sid Ceasar for this release!!

Both right and wrong. The LLL release is a TWO disc set - ONE disc features the complete film recordings (mostly in mono), the OTHER disc features the LP re-recording (in Stereo).

Come on, Basil! razz

I didn't see any discussion of an LP disc in the initial description and didn't realize it was only about disc 1. I now see disc 2 was identified as the LP in later posts. Thanks for clarifying.

Argh - purchased the Kritzerland edition only like 13 months ago...

Hate double dipping...but since this score has a close place to my heart (my family would always watch this movie on new years eve growing up), might just have to bite the bullet

Happy to see there's a sale price on it! =)

you and me both :-)

How different will this be from Kritzerland's 2010 release?

Read all the posts above you.

What Maleficio said - read the thread!

Since I'm a nice guy, to summarize for you:

The Kritzerland release featured the original LP re-recording plus some additional tracks they took from the music stems of the film;

The LLL release features the LP re-recording on its own disc (with the songs placed after the score), PLUS an ENTIRE second disc feature ALL of the original music found on the music stems of the film

Wow. This seems like a heroic effort to make the score listenable from materials that were never designed for such purposes--only to result in a mono version of a gloriously stereo score. I tend to agree with the poster who suggested that a good re-recording may have been the way to go here. But, given the fine prior work of Chelsea Rialto Studios, I'll keep an open mind until I hear some samples.

I wonder if we can get the cover art or tracklist before next Tuesday now that so many details are out?

Oh, I'm sure someone will post a high res cover on albumartexchange sooner than later. wink

I'm really looking forward to this one.

I had a copy of the one-sheet poster in my room when I was a kid (which was the image to the left of Ray's post above), and one day I noticed something you can actually see if you look closely at the reproduction he shared.

The caricatures start roughly where you see Don Knotts and Andy Devine then go down and the right. You'll notice the figures above them (none of which are celebrities) are a slightly different shade of brown.

If you look VERY closely, there is actually a wiggly line drawn above those celebrity caricatures, separating them from the nondescript cartoon people. Apparently the result of one work being fitted with an earlier work.

The only celebrity caricature I could ever find in this above the line drawing was the Three Stooges (with the parachute). All the others are strictly below the visible line.

I always found that interesting, and it's overlooked by most people.
