My opinion is probably predictable so perhaps not interesting, but the whole score is soaringly beautiful and enjoyably creative from top to bottom. My favorite cues are "Dark Day," "Shark Attack," "Hymn For Bethany," "Bethany's Wave," and the "Main Titles."
Saw the movie today and liked it more than I thought I might. I thought Marco did a lovely job with this and hope it leads to more mainstream projects for him in the future.
I have just heard the whole Beltrami score and must say that this is one of his best work!!! Truely up there with 3,10 to Yuma, so much emotions and this score makes me want to shell out those $ and go see this movie at the theatre That is how great it is...
I agree with David. This makes me want to see the film more.
Any favourite tracks from this? I'm really liking "Turtle Bay Surfing" (fantastic from 1:35). The surfing scene is beautiful with this theme (I've only seen the clip, not the film yet). "Bethany's Wave" is great too. Horror-ish cue "Shark Attack" is a fine piece at over 6 minutes long. A very appealing soundtrack.
I love this score. I have to admit I had difficulty enjoying it on my first play-through as the style was so unexpected from Beltrami, and it took me a while to process! Although, for the record, I'm already a fan of his previously established 'sounds'. On my second listen, however, I was absolutely entranced.
I usually find solo-vocal wailing a little cringeworthy in film music, but here its atmospheric range and simple melodies really made for a rousing experience. This is the most pleasant surprise this medium's had for a long while, and I hope it leads to more varied oppurtunities for Beltrami in the future. Having said that, hearing him reprise his Scream material again is equally exciting, we Marco fans are really getting to have our cake and eat it too this year! I'm betting 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' will be another familiar dark delight, whenever we get to hear it!
It's so awesome to hear all of this unanimous praise regarding Soul Surfer, with Scream 4 just around the corner. I think Beltrami fans who already really liked him are even more thrilled than usual with these latest releases, and hopefully those that don't like Beltrami or aren't that familiar with his work will take a good look at Soul Surfer (and Scream 4) as the man is triumphantly on the top of his game.
I am so gloriously thankful for Marco's music. It's such a gift.
On Soul Surfer terms, the most beloved gift is "Dark Day."
