If both the regular and deluxe editions are two CDs, what's the reason for having two editions? Usually when there are two editions released simultaneously (not just for CDs, but for DVDs and Blu-rays) there's a basic single-disc version and a double-disc version with additional goodies on the second disc, which makes sense, but here?
But whatever the reason, I'm sure I'll eventually get the deluxe release myself as well.
The cover fits in well with the deluxe versions of the LOTR OSTs (same style cover/case) - and they each had minimal extras (same content on FOTR, one bonus track on TTT, a brief DVD w/ ROTK). So I guess my answer is, consistency
Well... so Warner is indeed releasing regular and "expanded" editions, at the same time. What's up with that? I personally think is great, but what's really de point of changing just little things here and there from one to another? Maybe a single disc edition and a 2disc edition would have had more sense.
anyway, I'm getting the deluxe! great work by Watertower for us fans
I am wondering if it is because the 4 bonus tracks are for scenes that either got moved from Film 1 to Film 2, or scenes that no longer appear in the theatrical version and will appear in the Extended Edition on home video.
Heh, I don't know that I "announced" anything, so much as I answered a couple of small questions. Still, thanks for the plug!
As for the bonus tracks, I figured people would assume they weren't just tossed in haphazardly, but yes, much thought was put into every aspect of the album(s). This is simply an amazing group of people to work with. Thoroughly inspiring.
Well yes, I never once assumed it was a haphazard decision to put 2 of 6 cues into the flow of the score and leave 4 for the end. I'm just trying to speculate what the reason is
I'm sure there's a great reason and we'll find out in due time!
Definitely looking for ward to the release of this soundtrack. Like all of the soundtracks for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this will be ANOTHER amazing trilogy of music unified like NO other film series...except of course the Ring trilogy.
I think it will be just the Special Edition for me.
At a guess I'd say that the regular version will be what is heard in the films whereas the special edition will be the full length cues Shore wrote.
I'd rather have the music as written rather than editied / cut cues.
The special editions from the Rings trilogy did NOT include the enire scores as composed...it took the release of the four disc special editions to do that. The same will be true with the Hobbit trilogy...the regular and special (extended) editions will be released first, and hopefully, the full scores will be release as well.
Well... so Warner is indeed releasing regular and "expanded" editions, at the same time. What's up with that?
Look at the track listing for each CD. The special (expanded) edition has more tracks, but it will also cost more. Either will suffice if you are a casual listener...the serious listeners (you may be...I am NOT making ANY judgments) will want the editions with either the expanded number of tracks and/or the full score when released.

Interesting that they are going this approach though. Two different sets of liner notes? But largely the same musical content? It's all very ... curious.
Will there still be a complete album down the line? (Answer won't stop me buying now, just curious)
Odd. The film's latest poster says it will be on WaterTower Records.

Not odd...the WaterTower release is the US release...NOT the international release.
So are both regular and special editions being released worldwide or is the special edition only being issued by WaterTower in the US. Will Decca be releasing both versions in the UK ?
According to the Amazon page, this is complete: The Special Edition of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey contains the full score from the film with seven extended score cues, six exclusive bonus tracks, and deluxe liner notes packaged in a 2 CD hardcover digibook.

YAY! I don't particularly like the digibook package, but I am happy that the complete score is being made available right at the film's release. I'll grab it. Overall, it's a win for me.
