>>>>>>Of course, you could always follow John Williams reported reaction to the finished film of Michael Winner's THE SENTINEL--"I'm not doing this--sue me.">>>>>>>

If that's true, that's so cool!
I guess there's a reason Mr Williams has scored the cream of the crop!
There's no accounting for taste.
I couldn't imagine Goldsmith refusing to score a film due to it's awfulness, he wouldn't have a filmography otherwise!! wink

David Arnold smiled and shook his head comically when someone mentioned Die Another Day.

John must have been contractually obligated to keep his mouth shut about
Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, because those were awful films and not very good scores, ATOC is just atrocious film and score.

I remember Jerry Goldsmith's 1989 concert at the Barbican, which was broadcast live on the radio.

JG: "Who here is a Star Trek fan?"

Crowd cheers

JG: "Well, I'm not one."

Ha, ha...great stuff! smile

Appropriate description, given The Swarm.

Bruce Broughton called Stay Tuned "terrible" (he wasn't far wrong). And one of the many joys of The Music Of Star Trek is reading Leonard Rosenman's interview where he calls Prophecy and Robocop 2 good scripts that were screwed up by their directors.

I'd love to know what Alan Silvestri thinks of some of the movies on his CV (seriously, Predator one year and Mac And Me the next?).

Elfman didn't like 'Proof of Life' and said it was a rare experience when he found himself really bored.

When an interviewer touted THE POSTMAN as an underrated movie in interview with James Newton Howard, James responded by saying, "I don't think THE POSTMAN was underrated, I think it was basically a terrible movie."

If I wasn't so busy watching Gunsmoke, I'd reply to this with laughter.

I think if you are a working professional in Hollywood, certainly if you were of Goldsmith's era, there is little expectation that the bulk of product you will be working on will be anything better than mediocre. You get lucky with a strong picture from time to time but you'd starve waiting for it. And Jerry came up through TV, where you just had to keep going without much thought as to whether you were getting Shakespeare week after week. You turn down too much then producers stop asking. Goldsmith is admired because his professionalism and his inspired application of his craft was not dependent on the quality of one project or another. It's as if he couldn't turn it off, whether it was Chinatown or The Swarm. I think Gerald Fried was like that too. He never seemed to be on auto pilot.

I think when one of these guys trashes a film it's because the working relationship was poor and/or his contribution was poorly treated.

Yes. I'm no great fan of John Williams, but I don't think that statement should be left unchallenged. I thought Revenge of the Sith was some of Williams' best work.

The film of course is another matter.

He wasn't fond of "The Mummy" either, and declined to score the sequel.

Goldsmith said something down the lines of 'That was a stupid movie' (about 'The Mummy'). It was at a concert at The Barbican in London.

Neither of these statements are true. I was at the Barbican in London and all he said was that he wasn't invited to score the sequel to The Mummy.

Both the movie Sith and the score are great. John Williams has too much class to say anything negative about a movie he scored.
