While we are on the subject of TONY BENNETT, he did a nice vocal version of JOHN BARRY'S main theme for WALKABOUT-71-Although to be honest it could never compete with Barry's intense and touching instrumental variations of that great theme. Tony gave it a good shot.

Dulce Pontes and Hayley Westenra have both released albums in the not too distant past of lyrics added to popular Morricone themes. Both are worth seeking out. Mainly the Pontes though.

I would have thought mention of John Barry and Shirley Bassey would have been made by now, after all they collaborated on three Bond movies (Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker), four if you count her rejected vocal of Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang from Thunderball.
She also sang My Love Has Two faces from Deadfall.

Plus John Barry and Matt Munro. Munro sang From Russia With Love (Barry arrangement), Born Free, Wednesday's Child (from The Quiller Memorandum) and also recorded songs from Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and Mary Queen of Scots (This Way Mary, and Wish Now Was Then).

Yes if you look at Barry's total film score output , he probably had more singers , sing his music then any other film composer with the exception of HENRY MANCINI.i intend this to be a long thread, so in time I and hopeful others will contribute to list a large amount of vocal film music[like my genre pretty music thread has]

ROBIN AND MARIAN-76-JOHN BARRY- There was a female vocal singer who sang the main theme, it was not used in the final print. It looks like it was rejected but originally intended for the film. Short but sweet.

It maybe a bit ironic, that PINO DONAGGIO started his career, popular in ITALY doing music for many songs, including his hit sensation YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME BY DUSTY SPRINGFIELD in the mid 60's. Yet with all his beautiful melodic film scores very few vocal versions were done on his pretty themes.

HENRY MANCINI AND JULIE ANDREWS worked together on cinema songs, from the films themselves, albums and in concert[live performances] From the original soundtracks they did, DARLING LILI-70-A few songs including the beautiful WHISTLING AWAY THE DARK.10-79-which include 2 very pretty songs- MORE THEN A MAN,and IT'S EASY TO SAY with DUDLEY MORE. She also sang songs from the film -S.O.B-82 and the big hit VICTOR VICTORIA-83- which later became a Broadway show in which Henry composed some of his final compositions that Julie sang on Broadway. On albums Julie sang a bunch of other Mancini songs from TWO FOR THE ROAD, MOON RIVER, DAYS OF WINE AND OTHERS ETC ETC. Ditto, ditto in live performances with Henry as well.

If one was to ask the question -What singer or group sung the most film music? Off the top of my head probably the answer would be THE HENRY MANCINI SINGERS.

While of course a singer singing a film theme and how one feels how good it is , is just one's opinion, what I felt was one of the worst singing performances doing a song from the original soundtrack was from the film SAHARA-83- ENNIO MORRICONE came up with another lovely main theme melody used nicely during the love scenes of this BROOKE SHIELDS film. However a vocal female singer doing a variation of the theme did a terrible job on it. Destroying the very essence of the loveliness of the composition.

Like many things in life, getting the right break, lady luck and timing play a big factor in so called success. Some singers did a good share of film theme songs and never got a giant hit others only did a few and bingo, get a smash out of it, Such was the case with the fine singer GENE PITNEY, who got a big hit out of TOWN WITHOUT PITY-60- DIMITRI TIOMKIM'S title theme. What some people might not realize that his other big hit from a film THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE-62- was never used in the actual film.

As mentioned earlier HENRY MANCINI probably got more vocal singers to sing his music then any other film composer. It is a big list. first off HENRY had his own singers who did numerous recordings of his films both from the original soundtracks to Lp albums. Dozens of films this was the case. plus on a bunch of his music from films he got so many different singers to do their version of his movie music, some of these were MOON RIVER, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, TWO FOR THE ROAD-DEAR HEART,A SWEETHEART TREE[GREAT RACE] ETC ETC ETC. However here I would like to list the singers who sang his music from films that didn't become giant pop vocal standards.SIX BRIDGES TO CROSS-55- SAMMY DAVIS JR-THE PINK PANTHER-64- IT'S GOTTA BE TONIGHT-A SHOT IN THE DARK-64-SHADOWS OF PARIS[female vocal]-THE PARTY-68-CLAUDINE LONGET-MORE COMING
