...I'm very curious to see what Zimmer himself will do with a filmmaker like McQueen. There was a lot of snickering when Malick hired him too, but that produced THE THIN RED LINE, so, you know...

Exactly!

The movie is outstanding. Zimmer's part of the score is fine. Thumbs up!

I just have three observations besides the fact that the movie is very good:

The cornerstone of the score, that four note thing, is the same approach as Shame--was Shame temped with a Zimmer piece? Clearly the director likes that approach and either used the same temp or encouraged Zimmer to take a similar approach.

I liked the percussion cue for the riverboat--unique and every effective.

That "braaam" sound is apparently just considered part of the standard orchestra now. smile I would actually trace that back to Spielberg's War of the Worlds (and maybe you can even trace its roots back to the T-Rex roar in Jurassic Park). It's actually becoming a marker for the period now, just like wailing woman was (and still is to a point)--it's probably no different in a way than funk effects in 70s scores or the distinctive sound of electronics in 80s scores.

I don't know, but there's a LOT in Harry Escott's score for SHAME that sounds like it could have been pulled right out of THE THIN RED LINE.

According to a seller on ebay (he has the info in the Description for the item), a track on the FYC promo appear to cut short (i.e. being incomplete), and since the seller also says he have another copy with the same error, I guess there's a good chance all (at least several others) of the CDs are like this as well...

For all we know, the CD of it is probably just a CD-R (which is not uncommon with these things), and it might even have been burned from the same MP3s as on the site, so it doesn't necessarely have any better sound quality to it either...

And, just a guess on my part though, since the track that supposedly cuts short, track 4, cuts around 1 min +/- into the track (at least after 48 seconds), and track 4 on the tracklist, "Arrival In Washington" is 24 seconds long, it could seem like the tracks on the CD might not be in the film order (?), as the tracklist show at all. But maybe just burned in their alphabetical order...

I would like to know what do you think of this score.

I think Zimmer contribution represents the absolutely low level of film scoring nowadays. Not only the score is atmospheric at worst (I miss the day Angelo Badalamenti was the master of this particular style... a way of scoring that has never been good reviewed) but it also shows how deaf audiences and directors are today.

The full score is basically constructed around one theme which wouldn't be bad except for the fact it is a blatant rip off of "Time" theme from "Inception", a piece so recognizable for people (even for those not into film music) that should make Zimmer and McQueen embarrassed themselves.

After getting accolade from important awards like "Golden Globes" or "Critics Choice", I am really hoping this score gets no nomination at all for "Academy Awards". It's not worthy and I am pretty sure members of the Academy (composers) will not fall on this (even though the film is gonna be nominated for almost every else category). I can sense a nomination for "Rush" instead.

For me this is the worst score of the year. What do you think?

I think you are just blowing smoke. It's a very lovely, simple theme. Sometimes that's what works, and I enjoy listening to it so take your pity critic party elsewhere.

This score will only be nominated because of the film it's attached to. Happens every year. I didn't hate it, but there's nothing in it that makes me want to own it on CD.
