Enjoy, Ron.

Their recording of 'Orrence is particularly impressive to my ears, it's the only version I listen to now that I have. Some great music on Disc 2 as well.
I would also recommend the Tadlow release of 'Private Life of Sherlock Holmes' by Rozsa, which is a wonderful score beautifully recorded (which reminds me, I still have to get 'Quo Vadis').

By all means purchase the Tadlow release of QUO VADIS as it's one of the greatest film recordings ever!

Picked up "Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" recently and what a great work. The use of the Violin Concerto within the other score material makes for such terrific listening. Have not seen the film yet and look forward to catching it soon.

There are certainly more than a few post-"El-Cid" Rozsa gems!

Tadlow rules!

Then, give a try to their incredible TARAS BULBA recording. Everyone has a favorite Tadlow and all of them are beautifully recorded. But, the TARAS BULBA, that's a real powerhouse, both exciting and subtle but somewhat dangerous to listen to while driving.

Yes, pretty much all the Tadlow recordings are great and I highly recommend you get them all. If you want to prioritize here's my ranking of their complete score re-recordings (leaving out compilations and releases of original tracks like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, all of which are also good):

15. The Guns of Navarone (it has many good moments but overall this recording underwhelmed me)
14. Villa Rides (great performance but the score while good is not always my cup of tea)
13. The Fall of the Roman Empire (though not a Tiomkin fan this score rose greatly in my estimation thanks to the superb recording and performance)
12. The Alamo (maybe my favorite Tiomkin score)
11. Conan the Barbarian (awesome performance but the recording has some sound issues)
10. Conan the Destroyer (great performance and recording but the score while good isn't quite up to par with the original...the "bonus" of Basil's Sword and Sorcery Spectacular score is the highlight here for me)
9. The Hour of the Gun (wonderful recording of the complete score)
8. Taras Bulba (ditto)
7. True Grit (bring Mr. Fitzpatrick back to the podium because he knocked this one out of the park)
6. The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (gorgeous early Tadlow triumph)
5. El Cid (their most ambitious recording to date...spills over to three CDs and it's epic)
4. Exodus (superb on all counts and the bonus stuff is nice)
3. Quo Vadis? (excellent)
2. The Salamander (a revelation -- Goldsmith masterpiece would otherwise be totally lost on album)

And #1 (even though it's not my favorite score they've re-recording, IMO it's their most impressive recording/performance)....

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA.

For me The Almo is a tall poppy, a clear stand out. Everything clicked better than ever on this one. However, each has their own attractions, Exodus is tip top. I especially enjoy the extras.

For me it's...

Quo Vadis
El Cid
Taras Bulba

Quo Vadis imo stands at the paramount of Tadlow or anyone else's releases.

This has been a bonus. All of these suggestions are being noted. My copy of El Cid is on its way and I cannot wait to add the other Tadlow releases to my repertoire.

Are you referring to "The Ride To.....the nearest Police station for speeding."

That's a great track. smile

While the Rozsa recordings are large and lengthy, I think the musicians have an easier time playing Rozsa than other composers. I'd really like to see them attempt something by Alex North.

A couple of years on and my copy of El Cid is still my most listened to and cherished album. I hope it brings you as much joy as it has brought me.

does tadlow have any projects coming up in the next few months? by the way, FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE is the penultimate for russian sounding themes and harmonies in regards to film music. if anybody doesn't have this score, please listem to some samples and and obtain it. a real masterpiece.

Really? Are you including the battle music from Ivanhoe, Ben-Hur, King of Kings, El Cid and Sodom & Gomorrah in that remark? Perhaps you'd like to tap out those pieces on the piano for us as a demonstration of their simplicity? smile

I am really looking forward to receiving my copy. I will let you know my reaction when I have a listen - I am sure it will be pure joy.

I am pretty sure Tadlow's release of "Exodus" is great but will the original score ever be released?

This is probably the only "original" version you're likely to get;

http://www.amazon.com/Exodus-Original-Soundtrack-Ernest-Gold/dp/B00005QXCR

and it's not a patch on the Tadlow, which is sublime.

How comes that is the only original version we will get? Are the tapes lost like "Lawrence of Arabia"?

My understanding was that was the very reason for the Tadlow recording.
