I still haven't heard any Cuore di cane.

I have gotten A DOG'S HEART recently.

I like some of it but not the whole album. It's hard to describe this early on and I need a number of further listens before I can write about it in more detail.

Can't say it resembles any other Piccioni soundtrack that I've heard before, and in some ways its music sounds as if written by Ennio Morricone... eek

Does it include the title of the next Piccioni?

Fratello Mare (1975) is the next title
www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdLZXGwgB7M

Core Di Cane this one needs some editing for my liking my favourite tracks 1,2,5,10,13,16,18,19,21,22,23 I'm not too keen on the other tracks so far.
10,13 are opera and the main theme heard throughout nearly all the tracks that I like is very similar to the music from Swept Away only more somber.

I agree with a lot of that, wayoutwest.

For repeat listens, I start at track #8 and go forward. I prefer the monaural section over the stereo cues, to be honest.
(actually, the mono tracks begin with #12, not #13 as listed on the reverse side of the album).

Seems to me that Piccioni's CUORE DI CANE was another case of tracks gathered together for an intended LP program which never happened.

Think you could be right about it being an LP mix.
8,11,14, and 17 are some of the cues I have been thinking of adding back into the mix.

Wait till you hear Un Bambino Di Nome Gesu' I think it is perfect the way it is as a listening experience, you’re really on a journey during that one the openness of the first track sets you up for your trip the tracks that were left of are superb.

I'm a little unsure of the "Piero Morgan" ... Samples aren't available yet?

SAE has sound clips now on BELLE MA POVERE.

This one sounds much more lightweight than I expected. Like a Hollywood comedy score.

SAE now has some samples of UN BAMBINO DI NOME GESU'.

http://www1.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/27113/UN-BAMBINO-DI-NOME-GESU-A-CHILD-CALLED-JESUS-500-EDITION/

I like what little I hear, but am unsure how much appeal this title will have with other members.

Sounds subdued and not unlike a British film score.

More than once, I've been reminded of Stanley Myers when listening to some Piero Piccioni soundtracks.
There's a track or two within I FRATELLI KARAMAZOV which sounds as though written by Myers...

For me personally it has great appeal.
It is a very meditative, elegiac symphonic score. The themes here are often very touching, particularly with the use of the many instrumental soli (flute, oboe, violin) in typical Piccioni vein and with those up and down gliding melodic contours of the string section. Sometimes it is a bit similar to CRONACA DI UNA MORTE ANNUNCIATA from the same year 1987, but there are moments where the score has its very own voice. It is a very lyrical music with great feeling and often very inspired so all in all it is a charming and highly emotional listening experience.
On two occasions Piccioni takes up some older material: In track 7 we can hear parts of "Super flumina Babilonis" this time without choir from UOMINI CONTRO and in track 9 he recycles some suspense material from THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD.

I detect quite strong Light At The Edge Of The World reflections in the samples. I don't think I have the experience to notice anything else.

Seems to have sections not unlike a string heavy liturgical work, with some lighter flute relief. Immediately identifiable as Piccioni's work.

I like what I hear, appealing.

Or perhaps Myers composes at times like Piccioni. wink

Karamazov sounds like a cornucopia of Piccioni's stylistic approaches, albeit without the jazz.

Actually, I'm not reminded of Piccioni's music when listening to Stanley Myers.

However, there are times (very few, though) when listening to a Piccioni album my mind recalls certain passages of Stanley Myers' phrasings.

It's curious - but not easy to articulate.

BELLE MA POVERE
Have listened to this score a few times it is unlike any other Piccioni scores that I own it is not really my type of thing the majority of the score has a very whimsical feel.

I agree about BELLE MA POVERE. It's the first Piero score that I haven't been able to get through in one sitting. Definitely not my favorite style of scoring as well.

With regard to LE TÉMOIN (IL TESTIMONE),

Piccioni shows his talent of orchestrator mixing brilliantly pizzicato strings, flute and sometimes a trumpet sometimes recalling Nino Rota's scores for Fellini.

And then there were two. The Rota semblance is much clearer, clarion.

Anybody know anything about this U.K. CD containing Piccioni's MAFIOSO?

I expect the "EL" label simply reissued the contents of an LP program...

Most of the info is here:

http://www.cherryred.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=4748

Not sure of the source (vinyl or master tapes?). Unfortunately no complete soundtrack (I wish they would at least have the full IL MONDO DI NOTTE NUMERO 2 LP) and Mafioso itself only has 2 more minutes than the previous CD version, but I believe the "PIERO PICCIONI PRESENTA LYDIA MACDONALD (1962)" part is new on CD.

Tone Row, there was never an LP of IL MAFIOSO, only an RCA EP in 1962 with 6 tracks:
http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/title/19251/Mafioso

El Records therefore just took these same 6 tracks from the EP vinyl source. That's totally clear. Otherwise they would have had to license the rights from Radiofilmusica/Laurentiis for this score. And everybody knows that they
1) wouldn't do this
and
2) couldn't do this anyway
And as some of the other tracks/scores on the CD even belong to different music publishers, you don't have to ask anymore if they have licensed anything or even got mastertapes. Parts have just been ripped from vinyl and other parts like SENILITA', GUENDALINA or IMPREVISTO quite obviously from the existing CDs.
You have to consider that all the music on this CD is now more than 50 years old so that therefore sound recording copyright here in Europe has in the meantime of course expired for them. A label like El does nothing else than to exploit this situation.
