I find it strange, too, how mixed the reception is to this movie. I'm in the camp who loves it -- I think it's fun and funny and charming and a blast to watch over and over, and yet other people, even people with similar taste, seem to find it precisely the opposite. I don't understand it.

Very interesting to see that you criticize everything as awkward, ill-timed or failing which I believe is extremely well done.

Just to put it in perspective: which films do you consider your favorites?

My favorites? Jaws, Chinatown, 3 Days Of The Condor, Die Hard, 12 Angry Men, Marathon Man, Star Wars, About A Boy ...

Films I love, too.

Hmm.

Interesting...

Like I said, I wanted to love the movie and had very few preconceived notions about it. To be honest, was never that much a big fan of the original novels, so it wasn't that the movie stole my childhood or anything big grin

It just felt creaky and stilted. Back when there were rumors of a much longer cut surfacing on the BluRay, I'd thought that would be the version that would win me over, a longer cut might make things gel - but of course that version never happened.

I've not gone back to revisit the movie, never gave it a second shot, but am open to the idea of watching it again to see if it works better on a second viewing.

Back in the 80's I wasn't crazy about Aliens. Saw it in the theater and didn't like it. Saw it again on VHS and didn't like it, even gave it a bad review on the video review show that ran during my station's morning drive. But somewhere along the way I watched it again and it all clicked. Third time was the charm it seems.

Maybe another look at John Carter would do it.

I know the feeling. Happened to me with films and scores as well.

from the beginning, they stated it was Limited Edition, but didn't say how many.

True, but I figured someone on this board would have noticed and said something. I guess not. And it is surprising that it sold out or stopped production so quickly. As mentioned early in the thread, JNH's Atlantis (or at least one version of it) also had a 'limited edition' run, but the secondary market is so saturated it isn't scarce in the slightest.

Very sad - this is one magnificent score.

Maybe there will be an expansion by Intrada soon?

I thought it was 10,000.

And I would be very, very surprised in 10,000 units sold. In my imagination they ended up with 9,500 sitting in a warehouse somewhere and decided it wasn't worth paying to hold on to them so dumped them.

Which would be a shame.

Man would I ever love that! I would buy at least 3 copies of they did. smile
And from the pretty positive reaction it got here, I don't think it would be too shabby of a seller. Let us hope...

I can't imagine they pressed nearly that many.

It doesn't need to be said anymore that the film lost huge amounts of money (despite some apologists on the internet using very creative math to make it a hit!), so it's not too surprising that demand for the album vanished fast. That said, "Cutthroat Island" lost more money (adjusting for inflation), and that score has been released twice (and a third is rumored on the way)!

I just noticed John Carter has quietly gone out of print and prices are starting to climb.

That's a shame. Doesn't seem to be available on iTunes anymore, either. It's a outstanding score, and his theme for Dejah Thoris is one of the best things he's done.

Hmm - still available on iTunes, thankfully.

But I also secretly hope for an expanded version by Intrada following soon.

Just watched JURASSIC WORLD yesterday and among its many problems - None more glaring than the script itself - was Giacchino's score. It was just so uninspired, generic, ubiquitous (seriously, there's maybe 4 minutes of silence in the whole film!) and bland. It made me revisit this score later.

Why can't everything he write be as good as JOHN CARTER?

Was orchestrator Kevin Kaska really to thank for this score's success?

Listen to Kaska's "Battle for Atlantis" concert piece and than any given action cut on this score and you'll hear what I mean. Can't help but wonder...

I'm not sure you know what "secretly" means!

I've only heard Giacchino's score to JOHN CARTER in the film itself, so I can't speak to its qualities, but a Giacchino score I was very much looking forward to was DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, which I bought on CD when the film came out. I was very disappointed with it, and overall found it bland. He's set to do next next APES, but I just can't get excited about it.

True. Wrong word. Although, considering that so many people hate the movie and will call my hopes for an expansion ridiculous, I should have kept it a secret.

You mustn't have been listening to the same JURASSIC WORLD score I've been listening to.

Which one where you listening to? Because I can only listen to the one subtitled "Mediocre modern studio score; AKA "Jesus, don't you wish Jerry Goldsmith were still alive."
