Downloaded it from itunes now, too (available in Germany since a few hours ago!) - and I am delighted, relieved and impressed. The whole cues (surprise!) reveal the interesting new ideas and the development of the familiar themes.

For me, this belongs on the Best of-list of 2013.

I see it but the sequence of the tracks seems to be in disorder?
The first two are the Main Theme and then warp core values?
I thought the Main Theme is the last track and "Logos/..." is the first?

How is it ordered after you bought it?

Track 1: Logos / Pranking the Natives
Track 2: Spock drops, Kirk jumps

Warp Core Values is Track 10.

Is that the correct order? Haven´t seen the film yet.

Weird... that is the correct order but in my itunes in the album page everything is mixed up, the theme is the first track, logos... is the fourth... weird

Maybe a problem during the download? Can you correct it in the lists by clicking on the numbers?

Since only half the music was officially released on the OST, are there any outstanding cues missing from the release?

Honestly, I had a hard time making out much of the score in the mix of the film. The main title fanfare is pretty audible everytime it appears, but much of the rest is drowned out by sound effects. I think this is a score where you'll have to make repeat listenings of the film to pick out any noteworthy omissions. The standouts for me in the film were London Calling, Brigadoom and Ship to Ship and those are all on the album. I don't recall anything like the Space Jump / Drill Fight sequence from the first film where I *really* wanted those cues right after leaving the theatre and missed them on album.

Chris.

Thanks for the reply! smile

Before last night, I was skeptical about this new film. I was a harsh critic of the 2009 film and I often accused it of being "not the Trek I know." Well obviously it wasnt. But in time Ive grown to accept it (after multible viewings). I have been excited and nervous about Into Darkness...and though I participated in all the talk and such about it, and even bought merchandise, I was still nervous. And ANY Star Trek score is a no brainer for me...when the tracks were released via iTunes, I promised myself I would only download ONE track (The San Fran Hustle). Then..I went to a screening of the film last night...and holy wow!!! The film returns to the Trek values and morals that everyone knows its famous for! There were so many moments for those of us hard core Trekkies to notice and salute, not to mention interesting twists and turns that no one was expecting until it happened. As for the score...WOW! They cranked up the juice in IMAX last night and you heard darn near everything. And so...this Trekkie is happy with the latest installment. Even after getting home at 2am, I imediately downloaded another track, to satisfy my thirst until the CD comes out in a week or so. I like this score far more then the last one (based on what I heard in the film).

I disagree with nearly all of this!

The twists: predicted
The IMAX sound: obliterated the score!
Trek values: missing
Trek science: out the door

Totally agree, Spymaster. The thing that bothers me the most about it all is the numerous reviews that start off along the lines of... "normally Star Trek films suck but this one is awesome!". I like my old school Trek films! Sadly, this is on track to make a whack of money and I can't see the approach to these rebooted Trek films to change anytime soon. Unless of course, the deluge of new Star Wars films satiates audiences appetite for dumb scifi action and the audience realizes that Trek 2009 and Into Darkness are effectively Star Wars.

I liked the 09 film but just returned from this one and thought it was pretty bad. Why bother resetting everything with
the last one if you're just gonna repeat things in polarity? Some of the things in this genuinely made me
angry and I'm not even a huge Trek fan! I think Abrams can be a good director but those three writers
need locking away or teaching that plot and storylines require logic and forethought! They come across
as schoolkids excited about writing their made-up stories without any line of reason or consequence.
THEY MUST BE STOPPED!!!

Gave the score a listen. I guess it's Giacchinio's Star Trek theme and he's sticking to it.

I like him but don't like what he's done with Star Trek at all.

For what it's worth, A.O. Scott's dispiriting review in the NY Times refers to the film as giving him "a feeling of disappointment, even betrayal." He goes on to say about the climax "It’s uninspired hackwork, and the frequent appearance of blue lens flares does not make this movie any more of a personal statement."

I shouldn't say this, as I haven't seen the film, but my hunch is this will be my feeling, too.

I can understand disappointment, but betrayal? It's just a movie. How is one betrayed by a movie?

My problem is that, for all it's bluster, J.J.'s universe isn't pushing the Trek "story" on at all. Had it been a fresh reboot then he could have told genuinely new stories, but by trying to keep old fans happy he's trapped himself in the same basic universe and is going to spend the rest of his "era" re-telling the same old stories, but in an inferior way and without any of the scientific accuracy or emotional resonance that made the original TV series/films so unique.

Having one character ask another character how they dealt with this "threat" in the "proper" universe only emphases the fact that a) the plot is a thinly disguised retread and b) this universe is alternate and therefore inconsequential. Had this been "proper" Star Trek, they'd have dealt with the trouble caused by Nero, fixed the timeline, and returned home in time for tea, much as they did in First Contact.

It is the very definition of "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing".

YOR liked the first new STAR TREK very much.

One of his 12 wives even cried at the end!

And YOR is big original Trek fan.

YOR cannot understand all this hate towards the new movies.

Even the old ones had a lot of mistakes and "betrayals" to the series, specially the Next Generation ones.

Some people are just odd.

^ This. Should've brought earplugs. I also found MG's score to be "a lesser cousin" of his 2009 score. Pity. Liked the movie well enough, though...

Well, Owen Gleiberman, not known for embracing blockbusters, counters that opinion:

"Into Darkness is a sleek, thrilling epic that's also a triumphantly witty popcorn morality play. It's everything you could want in a Star Trek movie."

So... who´s right?

Nobody. It´s just opinions. Sorry, if A.O. Scott felt betrayed. Great, if Gleiberman adored it.

As a long time Star Trek-fan I was nervous watching Abrams´ reboot - and loved all of it completely. Yes, it is different from the Original Series/Films. But hey, it was supposed to be different.

And the underlying spirit of it all is clearly there for me to see. So I look forward to seeing the new movie very much.

The score already fills me with extreme delight and anticipation.

We enjoyed the film very much, but what put the icing on the cake for me was that it was embraced by the teenagers in the audience. A couple of girls were talking in front of us, and one asked the other if she'd "seen the first Star Trek film" -meaning the 2009 one, of course. I also discerned a gasp of recognition when the first notes of the score led into Giacchino's now iconic fanfare.

As delightful as it was for this old guy to hear the Courage as well at the end, it seems to me that this Trek has been embraced by the younger (next? smile ) generation and is safe in JJ's hands.

Of course! I had just read the review and thought it interesting. I hope to like it (and a friend of mine has a major role in its making, so I'm rooting for its success for him).

It also rather obnoxious for me to be quoting reviews when many on this board have actually seen the film.

My best friend, who grew up a huge Trek fan in the '70s, showed his kids some episodes of the original series a few months ago hoping to hook them. They thought it was Kabuki theater! Times change, and James Bond and Star Trek have managed to change with them, while so many other franchises do not.

you're right this franchise has managed to change with the times in order to survive and that's a rare thing. it's funny because trek remained basically the same from 1987-2006 and fans drifted away. as soon as new life was injected into it, many those same people who drifted away complained that it wasn't the same. obviously it's a matter of taste, but it's an interesting irony.

as for the music, i keep replaying 'warp core values' over and over again, i can't wait to see it in the context of the film on friday (yes i'm waiting until friday).

I just got home from seeing the local Sneak Preview in IMAX 3D. I don't want to spoil anything and I would appreciate it if folks kept that in mind for others. You can make a spoiler-based thread on why you thought the film was great or sucked in the Non-Score section if you want to use story spoilers.

First, I did like this movie. It was entertaining. Far more entertaining than many films I have seen but not on the top shelf.

It was said earlier:
The twists: predicted
The IMAX sound: obliterated the score!
Trek values: missing
Trek science: out the door

The sound man did obliterate the score. Don't think this has much to do with IMAX. Maybe it was the directors call or whatever but you don't hear too much of the music. When you do hear it was mostly themes established in the first film. I am eager to hear the CD so I can hear some music. Most of it is sub-background in the film.

The story twists once revealed are totally predictable but most movies do suffer from that nowadays.

New Trek has been more fantasy based since 2009 and I didn't expect any science and I didn't receive any. This is not a negative but a given. Don't know why anyone would expect science after the "drill to the center of the planet nonsense" with the black hole or singularity or whatever it was. Like if you put a black hole next to the moon it is pretty damn obvious it would still destroy the earth. No drilling needed.

There was plenty of Trek values in this film. Definitely not missing (like the music).

I agree with others that Abrams and his writers dropped the ball on this one.
The first 10 minutes of the last film completely had me, while the whole 2 plus hours of this one left me cold.
SPOILERS!!!!
WTF is all that wiping out the Federation BS? How many people died during that final ship crash?? Must have been thousands?? Millions?? And is Kirk now the leader of the Federation, since everyone else got wiped out? And a year later, he gives some banal speech and off they go on some 5 year mission!! The writers don't seem to have learned ANYTHING after LOST and seem quite happy to keep writing themselves into holes they can't get out of...or even care to!
