but the beauty of the Abrams-universe is that it all takes place in an alternate universe so... NONE OF IT MATTERS! This is the one criticism you keep making that I can't get my head around. Why doesn't it matter? They're still people, even if they are in an alternate universe. So what happens to them matters. That's like saying it doesn't matter what happens to people in other countries because they don't live in our country... ah, I see, you're an alternate Universe xenophobe! ;-)

That's like saying it doesn't matter what happens to people in other countries because they don't live in our country... ah, I see, you're an alternate Universe xenophobe! ;-) Because Star Trek has always considered alternate timelines/universes to be "what if" story of the week devices, not something of any significance. Suddenly we're meant to believe that one of these "what if" universes *is* significant, and the consequences are somehow important. How? And more importantly, why? Especially when they keep referring - within the narrative no less - to the other universe as the "prime" (i.e. proper, more important) universe. Am I supposed to care as much for The Intendant, for example, as I am about Kira Nerys? Would I ever want to start thinking of her as the "real" Kira? Of course not. If she'd been blown up would it have really mattered? Probably not. So why am I supposed to care about this version of Kirk/Spock?
