When I first started using forums years ago, I wasn't comfortable with the idea of using my real name online, so I would always sign up with a pseudonym of some kind. Usually, it was derived from whatever the topic of the board was. (Movie forum = movie character name, music forum = named based on a favorite singer/band, etc.) Over time, I was on so many forums that the names were getting difficult to keep track of. So these days, I mostly use my real name when singing up, although there's a couple boards where I'm a long-time member and have thus kept my old pseudonyms there. However, I only use my first name and never my full name.

I used my real name for years here, until I realized you could change it, and I did.

Interestingly, the community rules state the following: "3) With apologies to Google: Don’t be evil. You don’t have to be Pollyanna but don’t be a jerk, please? The world would be very boring (and so would our board) if we all had the same opinions, but be nice to each other. You are allowed to use profanity (although we wish you wouldn’t) as long as it’s not directed at a person. So often on the Internet it’s easy to assume that someone else is attacking you when that may not be the case; try to assume the best, not the worst, of other people’s intentions." So it's all there in the guidelines. Unfortunately, there are several who don't abide by it, and the moderators are sometimes a bit too lenient in their upholding of this rule (IMO). Far more than using your own name, I think stuff like that is very important. One shouldn't be afraid of reading or even posting controversial/minority opinions (God knows I have many of them myself), but stay on the topic rather than the person. Otherwise, it will only lead to a downward spiral.

Your right it is dangerous and ridiculous and though nothing personal against first breath, I think it is not wise to even consider that a thread should have been brought up to make it mandatory. Starting to act like some people in Washington. ------------------- A thread about mandatory use of real names can't even be CONSIDERED?. Some real fear and paronia displayed on this thread. My view is that people should be able to use whatever names they wish but shouldn't use false names as a cover for inappropriate behaviour. I don't work in the entertainment industry. It's highly unlikely that the headteacher of the school where I worked would have any interest in my comments about the music of John Barry or Jerry Goldsmith so I'll continue to use my real name.

I think this thread is funny. My father has been on here a few years longer than I have and he uses a nickname. He has always been afraid of some of the people on here, so he will always keep that nickname. If it ever becomes a requirement here to use your real name, he will no longer participate with this board. I am proud to use my real name and I will even change my last name here in less than a year after my marriage. Others here are accusing me of being ghosts from the past, which I am not and I think that is funny. I do have some of the same likes and dislikes as those ghosts, but I am Kim Tong. Those people that accuse me of that are insecure in their lives and think that everyone is out to get them. I have no problem with people knowing my name. I speak my beliefs and stand behind them. Yes, one day it will probably get me removed from this message board. One day when I run into some of the people on this board, I will not cover up how I feel and I will tell them face to face.
