Remember that early ENNIO MORRICONE song with lyrics that went something like HOLD YOUR HAND ON THE GUN, DON'T YOU TRUST ANYONE, JUST A RINGO LIKE ME.[HA-HA]

When I first started using forums years ago, I wasn't comfortable with the idea of using my real name online, so I would always sign up with a pseudonym of some kind. Usually, it was derived from whatever the topic of the board was. (Movie forum = movie character name, music forum = named based on a favorite singer/band, etc.) Over time, I was on so many forums that the names were getting difficult to keep track of. So these days, I mostly use my real name when singing up, although there's a couple boards where I'm a long-time member and have thus kept my old pseudonyms there. However, I only use my first name and never my full name.

I used my real name for years here, until I realized you could change it, and I did.

Whoa, two Shaun Rutherfords! Maybe you're the one everybody's mad at all the time!

I'd heard nasty rumors about another Shaun Rutherford at this board. Are you he?

I decided many years ago to not use my real name in forums... goes back to when I chose to maintain control over being able to search for my name on the web and make sure it wasn't associated to credit card info, etc. Just a habit ever since; though I have to admit it has been compromised by Facebook. smile

If Lukas and the moderator want to decrease the volume of bad behavior and personal attacks on this forum, then I think everyone somehow should be forced to use their real names.

I would have no problem with changing my nickname to my real name if this became reality.

Why not do it regardless?

This has been suggested before. We live in a world where employers will use any reason they can find to fire you, or not hire you. They scan social media sites and Google for every bit of information they can find. They go as far as to say your personal image (regardless if you even said or did anything wrong) reflects badly on their business.

So employers, employees, online feuds, trolls, so many individuals can use your words against you, and hurt you in the process. Some anonymity is required for ones own protection.

It's misguided to think people who use their real names are somehow the pinnacle of honesty and tolerance. People misbehave all the time regardless if they use a pseudonym or not. Case in point a few someones do just that, and often start flame wars in the process.

This. Sorry guys but when it's so easy to get into an argument over something, it's just not worth having real names out there to give an employer or people out to hurt somebody reasons to well...hurt somebody.

Your right it is dangerous and ridiculous and though nothing personal against first breath, I think it is not wise to even consider that a thread should have been brought up to make it mandatory. Starting to act like some people in Washington.

The only time it's been a problem is when things get heated - then people Google and denigrate anonymously - that seems to give certain types great pleasure. It doesn't bother me in the least because I am extremely secure as a person

Well, confidence is good, Bruce! smile

Although high confidence is valuable at a place like this, having a thick skin is even more important, I think. Whether you're posting with your real name or not. In other words, not to take opposing viewpoints as personal affronts. I think that's the MAIN property one must have in order to have a fruitful and constructive debate.

Indeed. Listening - or in this case, reading - respectfully to an opinion you might find condemnable is one of the fundaments of a health debate. *Than* you can take it apart. Or as I tell my coachees: respect your opponent, but never his opinion. wink

On topic. I stand for what I say here. So there's no need to use anything other than my real name. And it prevents multiple personality disorder.

Interestingly, the community rules state the following:

"3) With apologies to Google: Don’t be evil. You don’t have to be Pollyanna but don’t be a jerk, please? The world would be very boring (and so would our board) if we all had the same opinions, but be nice to each other. You are allowed to use profanity (although we wish you wouldn’t) as long as it’s not directed at a person. So often on the Internet it’s easy to assume that someone else is attacking you when that may not be the case; try to assume the best, not the worst, of other people’s intentions."

So it's all there in the guidelines. Unfortunately, there are several who don't abide by it, and the moderators are sometimes a bit too lenient in their upholding of this rule (IMO).

Far more than using your own name, I think stuff like that is very important. One shouldn't be afraid of reading or even posting controversial/minority opinions (God knows I have many of them myself), but stay on the topic rather than the person. Otherwise, it will only lead to a downward spiral.

Your barbed political comments on this and several other threads recently are tedious and unnecessary. Do yourself a favour and desist.

A thread about mandatory use of real names can't even be CONSIDERED?. Some real fear and paronia displayed on this thread.

My view is that people should be able to use whatever names they wish but shouldn't use false names as a cover for inappropriate behaviour.

I don't work in the entertainment industry. It's highly unlikely that the headteacher of the school where I worked would have any interest in my comments about the music of John Barry or Jerry Goldsmith so I'll continue to use my real name.

I think this thread is funny. My father has been on here a few years longer than I have and he uses a nickname. He has always been afraid of some of the people on here, so he will always keep that nickname. If it ever becomes a requirement here to use your real name, he will no longer participate with this board. I am proud to use my real name and I will even change my last name here in less than a year after my marriage. Others here are accusing me of being ghosts from the past, which I am not and I think that is funny. I do have some of the same likes and dislikes as those ghosts, but I am Kim Tong. Those people that accuse me of that are insecure in their lives and think that everyone is out to get them.

I have no problem with people knowing my name. I speak my beliefs and stand behind them. Yes, one day it will probably get me removed from this message board. One day when I run into some of the people on this board, I will not cover up how I feel and I will tell them face to face.

Its not about standing by ones word. It's about people with more power using your words against you. If one needs to work in the "real" world it does matter.

I wouldn't use my full name here, not out of any sneakiness - but because I don't want every single thing I do to be immediately Google-able if someone decided to look. Since I don't go to film score fan meetups or anything, my full name would be meaningless anyway (or, at any rate, it would be no more meaningful than the tag "mstrox" and a picture of Batman).

Shouldn't we be using our real names here?

Nice idea, but no.
It's a no-brainer.
There are far too many people who inhabit boards like this one who are just off-balance enough to extend their unhealthy mental state to actual real-life harrassment.

(Not to mention that, from an artistic or aesthetic point of view, it can be fun to be known by a designation you chose yourself rather that one that was given to you.)
