About every Michael Mann film.

???

Care to elaborate?

Thief - no songs
The Keep - no songs
Manhunter - score better than songs
LA Takedown - only 1 song, not better than score
Last Of The Mohicans - Clannad song possibly better than score
Heat - songs better
The Insider - good songs, but quite good score too
Ali - bad songs
Collateral - songs not better than score
Miami Vice film - score just as good as songs
Public Enemies - ?

So then, Last Of The Mohicans, Heat, and possibly The Insider has better songs than score. IMHO.

This, HeZat excluded.

While M83's score for OBLIVION was good, I think the song with Susanne Sundfør was the major highlight of the album.

Thor, while I feel the Oblivion score was the best of 2013 aside from Steve Price's Gravity, that song with Sundfør was just pure brilliance! Magnificent!

What about Last Action Hero? Pretty good songs from AC/DC and Megadeth.

Agreed! And what about "What the Hell Have I" and Queensryche's "Real World?" Awesome songs!

When I saw this thread title today I thought the obvious answer would be THE GRADUATE. I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet.

Iron Man 2 with all the AC/DC hits vs. John Debney's score?

TO FIRST BREATH- you really felt the song from LAST OF THE MOHICANS was better then the score?TO EACH ONE'S OWN.

It's a very fine song. I haven't really heard much of the score and I have never seen the film, but I'm quite sure I will enjoy the song better than the orchestral score.

The incredible two headed transplant-71- Not much of a score but I love the main theme song called INCREDIBLE, a perfect 50's type ballad with a humdinger of an ending.

Interpreting your question another way, I never cared for the way the wonderful composer Laurence Rosenthal "adapted and conducted" Mitch Leigh's songs to MAN OF LA MANCHA. No wonder it was the only time he was asked to do so. He is much better at composing cool scores like REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT, THE MIRACLE WORKER and BECKET.

Conversely, I thought his adaptation/conducting were absolutely BRILLIANT for "Man of La Mancha". For the record, there really haven't been many musicals made since "Man of La Mancha."

Pretty much the best thing about the film, imo.

GOLD-74-ELMER BERNSTEIN-Tough call, but I will give the edge to the songs, because there was a few of them. All fine ones. Score was good too.But I did enjoy the vocals more which was composed as well by ELMER.

I'm not sure the songs in Heat are any better than the score...it's just that there are more songs than score. They honestly compliment each other so perfectly. It's a true harmonious mix of auditory delight. A lot of Heat's music is also instrumental pieces or compositional music...so it seemlessly blends together so well. It's one soundtrack that I have to listen to the songs with the score. It took me awhile to find all of the music and make a complete soundtrack for, too. I hope it gets a complete score release one day. The film version alt of the title traxk 'Heat' is still unreleased and the finale 'Vince Shoots Neil' is still unreleased. Then there's the unused end cue 'Hand-in-Hand' that was excellent...so there might be more unused cues we've never even heard still.

Hope Goldenthal can get the score released in full one day.

Surprised no one else has mentioned this, but Goldeneye's an obvious one to me.

Not sure if this counts as a "song" per se, but the rest of Goldsmith's Sum of All Fears score is completely overshadowed by the opening choral The Mission cue.

Chris.

The Jones stuff, perhaps, but I think you'll like the Edelman material, which isn't that far removed from Clannad, style-wise. I like all aspects of this -- the Jones, the Edelman and the song.

Agreed. Rarely has there been a soundtrack album (or score, for that matter) where songs/instrumentals and score have integrated so perfectly. You couldn't have one without the other, and I love both equally.

I'm gotta get smacked in the mouth for this, but "Ghostbusters." The songs are so fun and add a great deal to the film, but when I got the CD score, I was really bored by it. It then dawned on me that of all of the music I remembered from the movie, none of it came from Elmer Bernstein ... except for the one moment when they're all powering up and gonna "show this bitch how we do things downtown." Other than that, a total bummer I never listen to.

Ghostbusters. The songs stole the show and Bernstein's well meaning score got relegated in the film.

I probably would have years ago but I like a lot of it as an album. It isn't a very good Bond score though.
