I saw a trailer for this on TV last night.

It looks awful, but I'm looking forward to hearing Daniel's score.

Agreed there will probably be no references to Goldsmith's theme but in a way it is understandable, as Goldsmith's theme just was never as iconic as the Mission Impossible theme. frown

Save yourselves, but the soundtrack, ignore the movie !

But is was THE theme for fans of the show... unless they imagine that there aren't any left in which case why this movie?

It's safe to say that are aiming the film at a younger demo then fans of the original show who are now in their 50's to 60's....

Now as far as I'm concerned, The trailers look like a fair amount of fun and I'm going to judge this film on it's own terms, I know going in that it won't be the TV Show, which I'm OK with, all I want is an enjoyable movie that works on it's own terms.

If you read the interview that Jon Burlingame did with the composer, the UNCLE Theme does show up in the film at what appears to be a rather good moment according to him.

So I'm going to keep an open mind until after I've seen it.

All the samples sound immensely intriguing. I enjoyed all the trailers a lot.

I will definitely check out the film AND the score!

Gee - what a f***ing good score ! Don't see the movie and have very little intention to do after the trailers I've seen, but boy, this score is fun ! Heard it now three times in a row, and it remembers to the best times of Lalo Schifrin and Roy Budd at her peaks - for me one of the best scores this year ! Retro, stylish, fun, elegant - cool jazz tunes like in the Sixties...Pemberton knows the feeling and style of the origianl series...

Much as I'd have loved to hear a new version of Goldsmith's theme, at the end it really didn't matter. This score is great fun, retro and heavily influenced by various composers. Do yourselves a favour and give it a listen.

Hear, hear, this is a genuine surprise and a delightful listen. My sources high up in U.N.C.L.E. fandom have also given the film a big thumbs up. It may not be OUR Men From U.N.C.L.E. but it's a good, fun ride and the best chance we have to keep the franchise alive in the pop consciousness. They can quote Jerry's theme in the next installment. ;-)

Wink aside, there was no reason that Mr. Pemberton couldn't have included a tribute-to-Goldsmith's-theme bonus track on the album itself.

But as you say, Joe, perhaps next time.

Favorite tracks: "His Name Is Napoleon Solo," "Signori Toileto Italiano," "Circular Story," "The Unfinished Kiss."

When someone sees the actual film, can they confirm if it features the following dedication:

'In memory of great film composer Jerry Goldsmith'

If not, why should I go to the movies and pay £10 just to be slapped in the face? Got a wife who will do that for free. And no, I will not patronise this film just in the desperate hope that the sequel will feature such an overdue dedication.

Thanks in advance.

In fairness, I don't suppose they'll mention Leo G Carroll, Norman Felton, Boris Ingster, Walter Scharf, Richard Shores, Robert Drasnin or anyone else either. Jerry Goldsmith wasn't the only person who made a big contribution to the original series.

It sounds as if Ritchie had definite ideas about what he did and did not want for the music and Pemberton accomodated him accordingly. To give Daniel Pemberton his due, he mentions the previous UNCLE composers in his list of thanks in the CD booklet.

I saw this yesterday, expected the worst... and I loved the film. Very true to the spirit of the original series, with a deft blend of action, suspense and comedy, if not, necessarily everything else. They did commit the unpardonable sin of ignoring the iconic Goldsmith theme (except for a 7 note cameo)... but still a very good film.

My question... can anyone provide the correct film running order of the released soundtrack album (including the four bonus tracks on the deluxe download)?

Many, many thanks!

Bloody hell, this did half the business that Fantastic Four did last week (but reading online, most people seem to like it). I don't think there's going to be a sequel.

I'll second the "bloody hell", I wasn't expecting it to do _that_ badly. I know they haven't really been pushing it hard, the trailer hit really late compared to most other movies (which worried me), but to do worse than FF is terrifying. I had understood that the buzz for UNCLE was quite solid.

On the other hand, it doesn't have much name recognition amongst younger audiences and the competition (Straight Outta Compton) was pretty strong.

It has pretty close to zero name recognition. And unlike, say, "Mission: Impossible" (which was also a faded memory when that film series began… though not quite as faded, I suppose), the title's meaning doesn't even promise excitement. Whose uncle is this man from? How is a young audience expected to know this? That, combined with trailers that seemed stylish but confusing, did this one in, I think. Nobody knew who it was supposed to be for.

I always enjoy your reviews and very often agree with your assessments. But having listened to this soundtrack this weekend, I would rate it as an absolute pox upon the U.N.C.L.E. musical legacy. Even the Barry/Morricone/Moroder mimicry is crass and more of an insult than an homage. Thank goodness Goldsmith's fine music didn't get drawn into this mess in any significant way.

An example from here in England - the original series was repeated around the title of the first movie in a tie-in, whereas The Man From U.N.C.L.E. hasn't been shown on terrestrial TV since the mid-90s (although the movie edits have shown up a lot on cable to this day).
