LOVING what I'm hearing so far. Horner had such a way with the human voice that, at times, was so heart wrenching; other times, exhilarating + goosebumps (such as with this soundclip).

This week, we had a great opportunity to speak with Brian Terwilliger, director of Living in the Age of Airplanes, about working with James Horner on a project that was not only one of his last, but closest to his heart.

So we now have the running time of the album, 49:48. Still don't have the individual track lengths.

Sounds like it will be a pleasant listen, though nothing really blew me away. Very reminiscent of his Avatar score.

I'm glad to see this is on Amazon U.K. as well

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M6YQGPN/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477169372&sr=8-1&keywords=living+in+the+age+of+airplanes+soundtrack

However, knowing Amazon's AutoRip feature doesn't exactly produce good quality MP3s, I'm concerned as to what quality these files will be (bearing in mind they don't appear to be from a CD).

Maybe Varese can get the licence for a CD as part of their "We Hear You" series?

The producers had this to say on Facebook when asked if there would be a cd release (I'm not sure I buy the claim that the iTunes release will be higher quality than a physical cd):

For now, it will be digital only . We're considering a physical release. The soundtrack was "Mastered for iTunes" which means it's 48k and 24 bit vs. CDs which are 44.1k and 16 bit, so the iTunes release will actually be higher quality than any physical CD.

I might add that many of us diehard soundtrack collectors have spent years amassing dozens if not hundreds of cd's of Mr. Horner's music. It would be a shame if our community didn't have the opportunity to add this to our physical cd collections, as it represents a bookend, of sorts, on the composer's stunning career. I'm sure if it was issued as a limited release, say 1500 copies, that it would sell out.

This album is really a lot of fun!! I haven't seen the film, but it seems as though it covers a lot of different timeframes and locations, so Horner runs with it and has all these little set pieces in different styles. It's so refreshing and wonderful!

Read the review on JHFM. I co-wrote it and yes, the film does span a variety of times and locales.

Our interview with the director revealed that he was in contact with one of the big three specialty soundtrack labels (but wasn't specific which one) about making a CD release financially viable with a limited run since that's what they do as a business. So if it happens, it'll be either on Varese, LLL or Intrada.

What fantasy world are they living in? iTunes doesn't sell lossless files. A lossy file is still lossy, and unless the MFI files are actually bigger than the 'normal' ones then physics will override any marketing trash.

Of course I haven't even had iTunes on my computer in....11 years probably? Certainly not planning on changing that. I might be willing to buy lossless at a reasonable price, But not lossy....because I don't buy lossy (for more reasons than just sound quality, which I wish more people understood)

Downloaded from Amazon UK this morning (U.K.). I can't tell if the quality of the MP3s is any better than normal without a CD to compare to, but they seem OK, and they are (according to my playback software) variable bit rate files so hopefully good. I'd still prefer to have a CD and do the rip to my own settings though, just to be sure I'm getting the best MP3 I can.

As for the music itself? Wonderful. It feels very much like Horner enjoyed this assignment, relaxing into the music he could create without the constraints of following action on the screen. It has got a slight 'Avatar' feel (which itself has similarities to Karl Jenkins' Adiemus music), but it's not a slave to that style. It is an easier listening experience than the usual film soundtracks of Horner and other composers, but is no less a delightful listen for it. I'm glad this has had a release. Hopefully there will be a proper CD sometime from one of 'our' labels, and if so maybe it could include more music from the film as well.

I agree with your assessment. Documentary scoring can really give a composer more opportunities to write music that isn't a slave to storytelling. This is such a beautiful and uplifting score and yet one that is made poignant by Horner's demise. It is one of my favorite releases of the year. By the way, the running time of the film is only 47 minutes so I think it unlikely that anything is missing from the album. Savor this one.
