I wish I could tell folks where to look but there's a great interview with Bernard Herrmann's widow somewhere where she tells all about who he respected and didn't. No love lost there between Bennie and Andre Previn, apparently. And he keenly resented Quincy Jones for commanding and getting a higher fee than he could, at least for a time. He did respect Jerry Goldsmith and Howard Blake. Can't remember who else was mentioned.

Herrmann referred to Previn as "that jazz boy".

Herrmann referred to Previn as "that jazz boy".

Let us keep some things in mind:

First off, like it or not, Herrmann (possibly more than any other composer whos worked in film) earned the right to bitch. Immensely talented, endlessly frustrated, always put-upon - Herrmann reminds me of another overly talented person a lot of people hate for similar reasons: Harlan Ellison.

Secondly, let us also take note that Previn's temperament isn't always kind, either. Snooty may be the best way to describe it. I find him very talented and wish he did more music for films but, man, any time someone talks about film music to him, it seems like you're asking him to roll his eyes back as far as he can.

Third - and this is from that Herrmann DVD, and told by David Raksin - "Benny" was known for running his mouth behind people's backs. It irked some and not others (Raksin shrugs his shoulders and laughed as he tells the story) but Herrmann was definitely opinionated, which distanced himself from others. ("Your understanding of music is as narrow as your tie" comes to mind suddenly) But when he was caught out for his opinions, he distanced himself from that person. He seemed to be a very strong person with an individual's temperament - but also really wanted to be accepted and loved amongst his others. That may also explain all his ex-wives!

I don't think Bernard was ever "jealous" of anyone save, perhaps, their greater popularity and not their greater talent. I can see him being a little PO'd that someone like Mancini getting a lot of work for writing "pop" scores, but not because Mancini was a better composer.

Herrmann's attitude definitely got in the way of his career but he was also "right to" be that way, considering his colossal talent.

Well there is the ying and yang of it.
There is the story of Herrmann coming on the LONELY ARE THE BRAVE soundstage and declaring the music was too good for the picture. But Jerry told of Bennie yelling at him from across the way that he was no composer as long as he got others to do his orchestrations. Again, it's when you catch these guys.

Yep - god forbid that people with an extreme artistic temperament should be in any way inconsistent big grin

Hi Ford,

I do not know you from Adam (and I am probably not too familiar with Adam either) but I would like to ask you a simple and honest question. Why do you so often reply to other members' comments and queries with such a disdainful and condescending tone? At times it is almost impossible not to respond to a comment with some irritation and impatience. However, this inclination seems to permeate the better part of your comments.

I am taking a risk that you will respond to me in kind but I am willing to take that chance to get a sincere reply. Thanks.

in most cases orchestrators are just glorified copyists.

How would any of us know what is involved with what an orchestrator does do or does not do?

All we hear is the finished product. It seems to take more people than it used to, but then again, composers seem to be working on a higher quantity of films than they used to, so that would make sense. I'm guessing that most 'fans' don't care and would not be able to identify simply by listening if somebody used orchestrators or not.

Unbelievable as it may seem, there are people who exist that don't like the 'Star Wars' scores.

I bet Brian Eno is one of them big grin

Wow, what a prick. Hey, everyone is entitled and all, but sure sounds like an insufferable prick big grin

Williams, the Anti Christ, really ? big grin

Actually, I think Eno have a point really... And in a way, Eno and Williams must be on the total opposite sides of musical expression. Eno is a minimalist de-luxe.

He stated that Williams have ruined many films. I remember a very well-known and respected film critic here in Norway who said the same.

I got one (since I'm playing it now)...you hear the one about Jerry Goldsmith calling the Sony stage to talk to Sandy DeCrescent, while Ed Shearmur was recording SPECIES 2 in the background & saying "sounds like I have some competition over there!"
I love that one :-)

The only reason to go on the record about not liking Williams Star Wars score, given its success, is jealously.

I disagree. There are many reasons one might go on record about not liking something. The most obvious one is that you don't like it.

Cheers

I have long (expected and) treated Ford very much like I would this man. Do not take either person's tone personally, as it is the effect of cumulative years of dealing with other people's bull.
