The Great Escape or The Last Starfighter. Though they may not have been my first Intrada purchases. But they are the earliest Intrada releases I have.

"Red Dawn", the first title Intrada released.

That was roughly 30 years ago. It was an exciting time, and it continues to be exciting to see what Intrada will issue next.

They had this wonderful little store front on Vallejo just off Polk Street in San Francisco. While hours were posted, the store was usually open within an hour of opening time. Folks drifted in, folks drifted out.

Conversations were had. Anyone could listen in or join. There was no internet to speak of, so it was always great to hear about the latest news in soundtrack circles...who was scoring what and what label was releasing which score, etc.

For us East Coasters looking for particular items, there was always Mr. Doug Fake himself, available on the phone at his store and happy to schmooze about matters of quality, availability, best versions to look for and just about anything soundtrack-related. Always friendly, mellow, knowledgeable. When he announced RED DAWN and the plan to forge ahead with a series of quality film music releases, I knew already from the conversations I'd had with him that we were in store for nothing but top-drawer stuff. And so it has proven to be!

I was disappointed to find that my individual order history on the Intrada website only goes back to 2003, so all of the earlier history (going back, in my case, to the formation of Intrada as a producer of recordings somewhere back in the mid-80s) is unavailable. No internet then, as Ron says, at least not in the hands of general consumers.

My first order from Intrada was for The Rocketeer back in the mid-90s when it was briefly OOP and I couldn't find it anywhere.. I think I was about 12 or 13 at the time and this was in the early days of my internet access when even Amazon was just starting out. Shortly thereafter they had a clearance sale on their old titles and I picked up the Intrada releases of The Great Escape and Planet of the Apes for $0.99.

About that time they used to distributed a four or five page newsletter with a list of all the titles they had available. As I grew up in a small town whose only record store would bring in only scores to the most popular movies at outrageous prices, this was mindblowing. Many of the titles on that list were for movies that I was completely unfamiliar with and I'd go through and highlight scores that I thought would be cool just based on their titles... I remember in particular thinking that there was no way that a score by Jerry Goldsmith called the Wind and the Lion wouldn't be awesome just based on the title alone (and awesome it is!).

There was something magical about those newsletters... I hadn't yet discovered many film music webpages and it was like a tenuous link to a bigger world. Thanks, Intrada, for everything!

Chris

The Great Escape from the Planet of the Apes sounds like a fun movie!

Apes on motorcycles jumping over barricades! What could be better than that?

1. Alien (Mike Matessino re-compiled and remastered 2 disc set). Along with the SUPERMAN: THE MOVIES blue box, these were my re-entry to actual soundtrack purchasing after years of biding my time. I've never looked back.

Followed by...

2. WarGames. An underrated classic.

3. Monsignor. John Williams and the London Symphony in the last of The Glory Years.

I think it was a Rambo, probably the first one.
A great score.

My early collection a whole lot of Varese though.

The first / first was the piece of heaven was the Columbia Records CD of Star Trek TMP.
It was too short, but heavenly anyway.

I believe it was The Red Dawn LP. I think that was their very first release followed by an LP of Poltergeist 2.

Exactly the same with me.

I don't recall if I had gotten the Poledouris RED DAWN LP in late '85 or early '86, but I purchased Intrada's LP of POLTERGEIST II not long afterwards.

The ALIEN 2-Disc set. The emotions I went through upon it's announcement was so nice I got it twice! Never heard of Intrada before then.

I think it may have been the Islands In The Stream or Extreme Prejudice LP 1987.
Purchased from Ava & Susans records in Sydney.

I suppose it was either Poltergeist II (30 min) or Inchon (The Goldsmith Assembly).
