I third RR and Mastadge (though that sounds a bit awkward now that I've written it).

I actually have not and don't intend to watch this promotional wisp. I'm just about done watching previews at all any more. I'm just interested in seeing the show when they, um, actually make it, and if I like it I'll keep watching and if I don't I won't.

I like the title; think it's better than Star Trek: Columbia, or Star Trek: Endeavor, or Star Trek: Admiral Nelson (I could go on like this all day).

I really like the new logo, it's everything I was hoping it would be!

Ignore. The. Fans.

I was going to say "amen" until I realized I don't consider fans "Fans". The only thing they are fans of is 'fanning the fires of discontent" no matter what the subject.

Or how about the production company waits until they have something tangible to show?
First we get the unveil of, get this... a Starfleet emblem! Now we get a "fake" teaser? Their desperate attempt at promotion is over the top silly.

It's a promotion. The point is to generate buzz. Given that both of these are linked all over the internet and have trended in my Facebook feed, they have done exactly what they're supposed to do. You may consider it a "desperate attempt at promotion," but I would call it a "successful attempt at promotion."

Exactly! And had they not shown anything at Comic Con during the 50th anniversary of Trek, these same "fans" would still be complaining that they didn't show anything. This is why the fandom is being increasingly ignored by the studios...

You can't make everyone happy has been replaced by you can't make ANYONE happy.

Fandom is a serious issue. It's destroyed good work - see Arrow season 3&4 for a prime example.
But even the creators are fans of things themselves. Fuller is a Trek super fan, Ron Moore was too. Fans *can* have important insights that creators might not see. And ultimately fans are responsible for rescuing the series in 70s.

I think The tech is still so new that producers and fans have not gotten their heads around how to properly use the overwhelming free flow of communication available. The tech seems to bring out the worst in people. I suspect anonymity is the key reason. Hiding behind a pseudonym online was fun at first but then it got old for me. I think signing up on the FSM Board in 2003 was the first time I used my real name.

In trying to stay on topic, as far as Trek music for the new show, I do like this piece in the teaser. Hope he gets a job. Other composers for the new Series? I suspect they'll be trying out new talent. I'm not up on Fuller's other series - Wonder Falls, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Heroes season 1... I should go back and watch, see what he likes and who he's used.

Because of course as a fan, I have valuable insights that should be listened to... or else.

Read into this how you will, but here are the first comments on the scoring from Bryan Fuller:

We’ve talked about the musical approach to this show, because music is so important to ‘Star Trek,’ and it’s the voice in many ways. We all remember the Spock vs. Kirk fight [in ‘Amok Time’] and the score for that – it would be great to pay homage to some of those things.
I don’t think we’d use [the same tracks] specifically, but it’s certainly something that we’ve had discussions about and I don’t yet know if we’re going to commit to that. [The title theme song] is still in discussion.
‘Star Trek’ music is so important and such a fantastic part of the feel of the show. As for [live] orchestral vs. synthetic – there’s a lot of very interesting things happening here musically, and we absolutely have to have orchestral elements in the show, and we talked about how if we don’t have a live orchestra for the show, we’d be the first ‘Star Trek’ television series not to have one.
But you look at how some interesting hybridizations of synth and orchestral scores have serviced ‘Star Trek’ – Jerry Goldsmith’s score for ‘First Contact’ had some fantastic mixed pieces. I also look at what Hans Zimmer does, and I love his score for ‘Interstellar.’
It’s interesting to take a bit of a mix with our approach; we’ll see when we get to that level of the production, but I’m very excited about the music – it’s incredibly important.

So who is scoring it?

Until it is confirmed, this should probably be in the non-film score discussion...

Why? It's a discussion about a pending tv show's score.

Update from CBS:
"New Discovery Launch Date -- May 2017"

http://www.startrek.com/article/new-discovery-launch-date-may-2017

Also, I updated the thread title to what it should have been in the first place

Lastly, I read recently that "no one hates Star Trek quite like it's fans."
Seems to be much hostility in this thread and it would be great if we could minimize that
I can start a "Music of Star Trek Discovery Hate Version" if necessary

Glad I didn't get that all access CBS subscription. The original date was actually Sept 2016 to coincide with 50th.

That's incorrect, a launch date of Sept 2016 has never been mentioned. The original press release announcing the series stated it would start in Jan 2017:

Quite right. And it was getting pretty obvious that there was no sane way they could make that date. But this is certainly at least a temporary blow to CBS All Access.

Someone at CBS must have read the "Was TMP theme for TNG a mistake?" thread.

There is probably a whole lot of musical re-composing going on at the moment...

I thought they originally did before press release. Guess I was wrong or read third party date..

Regarding the change of debut dates, remember that for a streaming series like this the entire run of episodes--12 or 13 in this case--must be COMPLETED so that the show can be available for "binge viewing" like other streaming series. With the show not even cast yet there was no way they were going to be able to complete the first season by January. I'm perfectly happy for them to take the time to do it right.

I know there is valid concern that there are multiple posts between the General Discussion and Non-Film Score boards, so I retitle this thread to:
"The music of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY"

Some names have been mentioned, I don't watch a lot of tv these days so I'm not "hip" to who's hot
Personally I'd love to see Brian Tyler return to Trek.

And as far as the delay, only good news in my mind
CBS All Access Only in the US would fail most certainly and I'm hoping they're trying to figure out a better distribution model
Also, Fuller is simultaneously on American Gods so I'm betting he want to give full focus to Trek
