This is already intriguing. Nic is taking it at a speed that works best for listening alone, and the opening phrase is bringing out the parallel fifth (fourth?) chords in the brass that somehow get buried in the OST. 'makes you want to chuck a spear ... in a good way ...

Just checked out the videos and can't wait for this one. Meantime I just wanted to ask Thor if he's looking forward, as I am, to putting on the Naval Battle at double volume on Repeat. Should be quite an experience, mate. Ha, ha...I'm impressed you remember. No, I always skip over those tracks (on my TCM single-disc release of BEN HUR). Drives me mad after 3-4 minutes, and they're all jammed together. But Jesus Christ (literally), how gorgeous the more spiritual moments are! Yup same, fanfares and percussion are the least interesting part of these scores for me. Though I may still end up getting this one. Hoping the fanfares and dances are easy to remove from the final version, separated in different tracks.

The naval cues Thor is talking about have NO fanfares (though there are several never recorded). Thor is talking about the repetitive nature of some of the battle buildup music, namely the rowers' sequences. Thor ... though you should go for this new Tadlow, the Rhino European single disc TCM was never the one for you! You need the recent single disc taken from two MGM albums, giving a varied and representative score, specially designed FOR album. And as regards the Naval Battle, that release has a short but incredible two minute naval battle condensed: https://youtu.be/NNFHN6HVUmU

Hoping the fanfares and dances are easy to remove from the final version, separated in different tracks. This is hard to identify with. Whilst people can like or dislike what they choose, there peeps through a sort of 'sophisticated people are above this quasi-militaristic sort of thing'. Well, not so, in a score like this. One brass piece that was never fully recorded was 'Gratus' Entry into Jerusalem'. This is based on a 2nd Century Greek hymn by Mesomedes of Crete called the 'Hymn to Helios', so that alone makes it special. Rozsa was passionate about these things. The Nürnberg version of this was adapted by Rozsa for full orchestra, though the OST-only Scrooges wouldn't care. Here's a group with singer doing Mesomedes' original, which Quo Vadis? from Tadlow/Prometheus gave us in more detail in 'Marcus and Poppaea': https://youtu.be/UnRd8fXdR0U

William, I have a feeling I've asked this before, but can you clarify which albums from the FSM comprehensive set were used for this single-disc set? (If I'm right about that.) The two "Kloss" albums?

William, I have a feeling I've asked this before, but can you clarify which albums from the FSM comprehensive set were used for this single-disc set? (If I'm right about that.) The two "Kloss" albums? The Savina Rome album, and the 'More Music' Volume 2 LP. i.e. FSM disc 3 part 1 and disc 5 part 1. The Lion album was never quite so well performed as the Savina and had worse sound (though some'll tell you otherwise). Only 'Roman March' was better on the Lion album.

Thanks a lot, William. I don't know these highlights albums well enough yet - something to remedy in preparation for this new release.

The Savina Rome LP album, and the 'More Music' LP album both contained their share of valuable self-contained musical "miniatures" such as the succinct "Naval Battle" referenced above, and others which expanded on the edited versions used in the film -- "Roman March," "Friendship," "Return to Judaea," "Gratus' Entry Into Jerusalem," "The House of Hur," "Death of Messala," "Sermon on the Mount" -- as well as the enhanced versions of "Messala's Revenge," "Farewell to Rome" and "Golgotha." I'm sure James Fitzpatrick, Leigh Phillips, Nic Raine and Gareth Williams will find a balanced way of fitting all of these into their overall structure of their project without undue duplication of cues. Many of the more complete album cues could easily replace the edited film versions ("Return to Judaea," "Gratus' Entry," "House of Hur") within the main programme. On the other hand, the complete naval battle music with its back-and-forth cross-referencing between the battle and the rowing of the galley slaves may (perhaps) require a more coherent musical approach in absence of the visuals, but I'm not worried. Whatever the decisions, the project is good hands. It is "Written In The Stars."
