I am closely eyeing the Intrada Red House, anyone have opinions?

Great, except that they made it 2 discs and divided it awkwardly.

Burn your own 1-disc version and eliminate the needless church music track.

Also, I may be wrong, but exactly how is there apparently no rerecording or even a full length disc for the Oscar winning "Double Life". PLEASE feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

You're dead right! Rozsa's second Oscar winner and ZILCH. A mix of his historical/psychological/film noir styles, and nothing other than a bootleg RPO Prelude and a mono suite from the '40s.

The Intrada RH is good: if you've an Amazon Music account you can hear before you buy.

I watched the movie, loved the score. Have ta get that one. I'm astounded there's no real full length of DI...it's borderline criminal. And an Oscar winner...mind-boggling.

Listened to CD 1 of Thief of Bagdad and had a big grin on my face throughout. I am so impressed with these Tadlow releases.

Bernard is my favorite film composer, but it's a bit strange to me how much more of his discography is available.

I think Onya has a point in regard to the epics (despite how much I love them). The noir side of Rozsa's work is ridiculously underrepresented. This has to change.

Maybe I'll change the situation when one of my CDs reaches a million copies lol! Not likely but heck yeah, I'd be all over getting this stuff rerecorded if that were so. I'd make it a priority.

But wait...no, King of Kings first (sorry Onya).

I've been looking for an at least more-than-partial recording of The Power, and the line up here seems quite apropos. Does anyone else have this disc and if so. what do you think of it?

The reccomendations here are as always greatly respected and appreciated. Here's the link:

I do not have that CD, but I can tell you that the most complete version of The Power can be found in the now sadly OOP Rozsa Treasury box set, which contains a lot of great material from his MGM years (My favorite full score in the set is Young Bess).

The rarity of that treasury box set is the source of continual frustration to me, easily as much so as the full version of King of Kings (which I've read is a mostly full re-recording of KoK drool, sigh).

I'm also getting very interested in the FSM Valley of the Kings release, being such a huge fan of the epics.

This is a bit unique. The first half is a collection of church choruses for SATB and organ based on themes from King of Kings and Ben-Hur for liturgical use. One chorus is a setting of a Hungarian poem about the Magi. Intrada also performed this set on a recent CD along with a Rozsa choral concert work, the 23rd Psalm in Winchester Cathedral, England. The Utah one has clarity, the Winchester atmosphere.

The 'Power' suite (originally on vinyl for Citadel) is a re-recorded album, but the performances are really good. It's less complete than the FSM.

I'm probably going to have to snatch up a copy of the FSM when it surfaces again used (at a price that won't kill me).

I was THIS close to picking up the two-disc Rhino King of Kings today...but had a hard time talking myself into paying over 150 US for a less than new copy. And this is coming from someone who both had the cash and loves that score to death. Two CDs for that price...it just seems predatory on the part of the seller imo.

WagnerAlmighty, if you're seriously considering spending $150 on King of Kings, don't. I'm sure somebody will reissue it sooner or later. BUT I very much doubt the FSM Treasury box is goin to get reissued again, because Lukas already did that 2-3 years ago and I think used up the remaining packaging that had been manufactured. In fact you probably only missed getting one New at its original price by less than a year. BUT I would point out that the original price was $180 plus shipping (which I think put it over $200). There is a NEW sealed copy on Amazon Marketplace right now, with free shipping from Amazon themselves, at only $269.95, which to me still seems like a great deal and you should snap it up before somebody else does, seeing what a Rozsa fan you are. I love my copy and would have paid that much for it, seeing as it's a whopping 15 discs and even at that higher price it breaks down to a very reasonable $17.99 a disc.

You were contemplating spending $75 a disc on King of Kings so this seems like a no brainer!

The Treasury is a different recording, but yes there is a substantial amount of King of Kings included. Unfortunately the Rhino wasn't terribly expensive at the time the Treasury was put together, or I am sure Lukas would have included a new version of it in the set. Instead he licensed all of the outtakes Rhino did not include from the film recording, and premiered the album recording on disc:

Don't delay or some board lurker may snatch that new copy right out from under you! smile

Does anyone have this expanded edition of Ivanhoe? I have the Intrada...it looks as though there are eight more tracks on this one!

I have it. Another OOP Rhino title that FSM provided alternates/outtakes/fanfares to complete on their Rozsa Treasury set. Absolutely worth owning to have the original film recording conducted by Rozsa, though the Intrada is indeed complete (look at the length on soundtrackcollector.com, not number of tracks) and excellent to boot!

I fell in love hard (first listen) to the Intrada Ivanhoe.

The Rozsa Treasury...it's becoming irresistible.

In summary, to have everything that survives of Rozsa's years at MGM, one needs the Rhino Ivanhoe and King of Kings*, plus all of the Rozsa FSM releases including the Treasury set. Their amazing online notes for the Treasury have a Rozsa at MGM guide page that should answer all your questions about his surviving output from 1948-1968:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/notes/rozsa_at_mgm.html

*Rhino also had other Rozsa releases besides these two, but all was superseded by superior FSM releases (ie. Ben-Hur) except for these two which were still readily available at the time.

Slight correction about one FSM Rozsa title that isn't necessary as a Rozsa completist if you have the Treasury: FSM originally released the bootleg program of The Power (less than half an hour in inferior sound) on a single CD along with Russel Garcia's fun score to Atlantis: The Lost Continent. That disc is only worth getting for the latter Garcia score at this point, because when scouring archives to make their Rozsa Treasury as definitive as possible, they surprisingly uncovered the complete multitracks for The Power and included it, in much superior sound (and complete & chronological) to their earlier release.

Yes, both versions of Ivanhoe are great. Like Julius Ceasar, I give a slight edge to the OST, but the re-recordings are great too. Actually it is hard to choose one over the other...

I'm going to echo Yavar's sentiments. In the age of cd stores, those Rhino releases were everywhere, so a used copy might show up somewhere for a reasonable price. In the future, the FSM Treasury might be much harder to find. I was going to write that it might be like trying to find a copy of Rozsa's Jungle Book score, which was a special release, but it seems one can get a copy of this through Amazon for a reasonable price.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj9DLEtdpbU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUHAP3E8eSA

Btw, the Jungle Book is another release I would pick up before splurging on King of Kings. It kind of foreshadows Quo Vadis? (which is featured in the Treasury set). I assume you have already picked up Tadlow's excellent re-recording of Quo Vadis?... Anyway, the Treasury is a unique release, and it features a lot a stuff you can't get anywhere else. There's a lot of good scores in this set like Madame Bovary. I don't (like) waltz(es), but I like Rozsa's score. "All the Brothers are Valiant" is another great score included in the set. It's Rozsa and the high seas (think Thief of Bagdad or The Plymouth Adventure). The treasury also includes small gems like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQy0NjF_tNo

The treasury is a must-have!

NP: Farewell from Young Bess (also featured in the Treasury)

I don't want to recommend everything, but this is a great cd too. I listen to it a lot. As always, The Mother's Love cue is amazing. This cd could (momentarily) satisfy your King of King fix. If you like the Via Dolorosa track on the Sony cd, your'e going to love "The Way of the Cross" chorus. The same thing is true for the Sermon on the Mount cue. And there's also:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JEcc22X-Zs

The Power is a cool (almost noir-ish sounding score) and the use of the cimbalom makes it even cooler.
