I thought the movie was a little corny (don't hate me), but am as of the past month big into maestro Jerry. Found it for a good price at a local seller and had to pick it up.

Star Trek: FIRST CONTACT Its a bit embarrassing to own ANYTHING from TNG* but.... I heard the main title for the first time recently and instantly fell in love. I am Locutus! B * I do like the Borg storyline so I can look (half) myself in the mirror

Ps reading some newish Liszt bios.... Wagner was even worse a human being than I remember. LISZTOMANIA really nailed him. So had could such a vile figure compose such heavenly musik? Wagner was a loser as a person, imo. But you can't just unhear the prelude to Act One of "Lohengrin". Speaking of....going to put the Decca Solti on the player.

I am expecting: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (after spinning my fav Goldsmith score; Planet of the Apes (am also a Trekkie)) Varèse Sea Hawk (from recommendations on this board) Varèse Robin Hood (ditto). Well, have received these and spent this morning transferring to my iPod, then played Star Trek. Excellent! Just as I remembered it from back in the day, but so much better sonically. The extra material is a revelation. I have listened to Robin Hood (Varèse) and I think I prefer the Stromberg by a whisker. However, it may come down to preferring both as separate and equally good interpretations. Next spin will be ET and then The Sea Hawk! Michael, please let us know how you liked the Sea Hawk! That and Robin Hood might have to be my next Varese order. I received both The Red Pony and Family Plot from the "V" (both very highly recommended by Yavar). REALLY looking forward to listening!

That and Robin Hood might have to be my next Varese order. [snip] Will do. However, I do not have your musical background so my views will be superficial(non-professional) - based on my acoustic sensibilities and layout of the scores. I also have the Stromberg The Sea Hawk to make a comparison. I wouldn't ask unless I respected your opinion my friend. And believe me, a musicological outlook can sometimes impeded one's listening experience. When I first heard scores like Man of Steel I was definitely perturbed at all the repetition, simplicity, and over reliance on percussion (btw that goes for the majority of action flicks these days). But it grew on me and now I really love it (easily my favorite score of this century). I had an even harder time with Winter Soldier, and to add to the list above it was so obviously indebted to Zimmer, and even less melodically oriented. But again, I like that score, it can be quite energizing. So...even I take musicology with a grain of salt. I still listen to a little Cannibal Corpse and AC/DC, and those are two bands who basically put out the same album over and over (with some increased musicianship on the part of the former).

Contrary to my earlier opinion I think they both have some problems. The Stromberg is sonically good with a very open soundstage and seems complete whereas the Varese seems subdued sonically. I had to crank up the volume to get a similar audio to the Stromberg. The Stromberg however, seems to me to have a mastering or mixing problem? So maybe having both is the solution? The Sea Hawk Varese is impressive, crisp as someone said, and sonically powerful with the vocalist spot on. The Stromberg is also very good but, as was also mentioned, the female vocalist is not good, but the Stromberg has much more material, which I like. I think having both is a big plus.
