The death of my little brother in 2013 had me listening to some pretty heavy stuff. I got into Scandinavian Black Metal, Penderecki, Schoenberg, despicable death metal like Devourment.

I listened to that stuff for months after. Losing someone probably does that to a lot of people.

I really loved the music to August Rush until I saw the movie and it devastated me emotionally. I never really explored why it hit me so hard but there it was. For many years after my first viewing of the film I couldn't listen to the soundtrack or watch the movie. About a year and a half ago I finally watched the movie again and while it was still very emotionally powerful some of that initial difficulty has gone away, though it still makes me tear up near the finale every time.

Yes.

Back in 2011 or so, I was diagnosed with chronic tinnitus in my left ear. Every waking hour, the sound was there. Like when you turned on one of those old fat tube TVs, that's the sound. Just multiplied by 10. As the years went by, I managed to overcome the psychological stress to a reasonable extent.

But then in October last year, the sound suddenly DOUBLED, and it's now at a completely intolerable level that I can no longer deal with.

Suffice to say, all of this has had a huge consequence for how I listen to music. I'm no longer drawn to big, orchestral action scores, but prefer the calm and textural. Or the electronic. I can no longer listen to music intently alone, but have to have it on in the background while I do other things (like sitting on a PC) -- as I multitask, I fool the brain (the creator of the sound) to divert less attention to it.

But beyond this very biological event, I would have to say that there's a personal taste evolution going on too, that also has had some bearing on how and what I listen to. I did a thread on this awhile back, but can't for the sake of me remember what I called it.

Man, that is truly tragic.
can you listen to music from speakers or doesn't it matter?
Hope things get better my friend
Bruce

Switching over to a set of old Marantz speakers from the 70s. The quality is just so much more warm than what I was used to.

Yeah, I have Realistic speakers from 1973. Maple wood cabinets.
Still the best sounding compared to modern versions>

I liked that faerie tale of a movie...but I grew up playing guitar and had to overcome some serious reality checks when watching that film. Being a lifelong musician and seeing how the kid came up so fast...it's just not possible today.

Once I put the effort into really kicking in my suspension of disbelief (same happened with Pretty Woman) I got a lot more enjoyment out of it.

I have just a little bit of tinnitus on my left ear, but nothing like some of you guys seem to have. It bothered me when I first encountered it, but not really now anymore. But I'm far more focused on not hurting my ears with loud music now. I'm going to have those ears for the rest of my life.
