Can we count Heavy Metal as sci-fi movie? Personally, I'd say if a non-sci-fi/fantasy movie such as JAWS gets a pass, Heavy Metal should be a no brainer. :-) After all, Heavy Metal is a sci-fi/fantasy movie (indeed, both sci-fi and fantasy).

The Thing (82) I love the cast, everyone is good in their role, the Rob Bottin (and Stan Winston) effects are still tremendous, the score by Morricone and Carpenter is very effective and memorable. Desolation from the soundtrack is in my top five tunes ever. Lots of great lines. And I live the snowy setting. Now that I love in Saskatchewan it just feels like being in the film 6 months of the year. It sort of very gory but not really and not repulsive in it's violence just fascinating. It's my second favourite film (Jaws is top).

I always enjoyed batteries not included by James Horner. It's a sweet story, great score, great effects, they don't make em like this anymore, sadly.

It's always the one film I haven't seen in a long time that pops up in my head as favorite, so that would be: ALIENS - even though I'm not much for action films, I liked that it was a woman driving this film. And it was the best (and maybe not the last! ) time Cameron did an exoskeleton fight sequence.

Aliens - which I don't naturally consider sci-fi, but can be made to fit

I have two favorites: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND - I admit I finally saw the whole film relatively recently, but John Williams' score has always been one of my favorites. It's a superb film, no doubt, and it really makes you think about the possibilities - and potential dangers - of what life may exist beyond planet Earth. The final scene is a sight to behold, and Williams' music for it is enough to make one stand still and take it all in. That literally happened when I listened to the old 1998 Arista release of the full soundtrack years ago. EX MACHINA - Though it's more recent, EX MACHINA is a brilliant sci-fi/suspense thriller thanks to the performances of Oscar Isaac, Domnhall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander. It's also a thought provoking look at how A.I. technology can be as dangerous as it is promising, and that part of the film gives it real relevance in today's modern world. Lukas, I wish you all the best with your film, and I can't wait to see it!
