I'm disappointed in the effects too, but I understand the technical issues and I'll still buy it. However, I feel deeply disappointed that the advertising was not forthcoming in this regard, and gives so little information that I thought it was a scam initially. There's a fine line between protecting your investment and duping customers; this feels like it treads that line too closely.
Thanks Peter for giving us details, and for graciously putting up the sound samples which reveal the state of the audio.
Quick question about the second and last tracks on this album. Would those be the versions heard in the current print of the special, or are they the longer versions heard in the original broadcast to accommodate the sponsor credits?
I can remember when they were practically giving away LPs. Only a few years ago I could pick up a dozen for $15.
But in this case I want my low quality audio in as high quality format as I can. (I mean on CD--I know, I'm asking for trouble picking sides between LP and CD.)
It's always nice when something like this can be remixed and remastered, but that's just not possible every time. It's a little disappointing considering just how good the re- mixed/mastered Xmas album sounds.
I'm still giving them my money for this- and hoping for a Thanksgiving trifecta.
Blimming heck, what a wonderful release Varese don't put out quality as some people put it, Thank you very much, Varese, in me next order, keep up the excellent work.

As dispiriting as that review is (and the points he makes are well taken), it's weird that I still enjoyed that clip, strafing runs and all. Despite all the problems, I suspect I can't resist this one.
It is inexcusable that the the presence of sound effects is not prominently noted on the packaging, though.
It's too bad they couldnt get the stems from a good film copy. The review sounds like it's one of those beat-up old M&FX used for foreign language dubbing. But given the low price, I disagree they're ripping people off.
I just cancelled my Amazon preorder based on that review and the YouTube video beneath it. I had forgotten how extensive the sound effects were in this special, especially the Red Baron stuff. Bummer.

If you pretend you're eating chips and brushing your teeth on 4th of July, it'll seem like acceptable background noise.
Btw, this is not a Varese release. This is a Craft Recordings label release. It's a sister label under the Concord brand. So Varese had zilch to do with this. I was not involved in marketing or A&R'ing this.
Being a soundtrack fan I always enjoy knowing before buying an album if there is dialogue and/or effects on the album. I've been that way for over two decades.
