I have been following this discussion and did not have this soundtrack. I purchased a new copy on Amazon from this seller. I remember it being too expensive but this seller has new ones for 24.99 shipping included.

With the probable loss of the Titan submersible with all on board- I'm seeing a lot of social media comments re. the Titanic 1997 movie.

But the first thing that came into my head was John Barry's Deep Quest/Flood from the RTT soundtrack. When the Starfish submersible imploded. Taken from the novel I believe.

Though the movie flopped - there were some scenes which emphasised the incredible dangers at those depths and pressures- and Barry's music emphasises that. Again, Barry could write that kind of peril into a soundtrack, even without a movie.

Raise the Titanic is an evergreen. I played the DVD sound-clip suite from Youtube twice yesterday, and I want to play the Silva now but I'm stuck at work. Not everybody gets it, and they say Barry did "this kind of thing" many times, but I don't quite think so. I find the various melodies in this score exceptionally haunting. And it's not because I'm thinking about the movie or the actual ship— I'm not. It's because the music is intrinsically good.

Raise the Titanic and The Black Hole are both excellent, RTT being the greater one, but both scores suffer disrespect for the second-class status of their namesake movies.

Anyone know anything about these 2 books on the making of the movie?

I know of them but they're too expensive for me to partake just because of a peripheral, scoring related interest.

Cheers

Whatever self-assessment John Barry gave his own score, it's one of my favorite Barry scores.

The Raise the Titanic score seemed to kick off a maverick period for JB, where you couldn't be sure what project he would take next, or precisely what shadings within his own style he would choose.

Obviously Raise the Titanic got towering majesty, combined with the mystery sound that was Barry's forte.

I just listened to RAISE THE TITANIC again today (the Nic Raine recording, which I have since it came out), while we were diving around the coast (yes, not the best acoustic, but it’s a decent multi speaker car system). It's a gorgeous score, it's the best "Titanic themed" score there is (sorry, James Horner).

The grandness, the nostalgia, the myth of the Titanic, it's all there in the music.

I haven't watched the movie, though I have read the novel on which it was based, so I am familiar with the plot. Can't say how the original recording compares to the newer recording, but I enjoy the Raine recording a lot. Great sound.

The score is one of Barry's movie-saving salvage jobs. If you've only read the book you haven't seen the movie, which tosses a lot of its Cold War intrigue in favor of dull underwater "excitement" and really blows the crucial moments. (My high school English teacher Charles Haas advised on this film--his reaction was polite, shall we say--and Cameron's, has been to the wreck, and has been in the news this week.)

Thanks Stephen. You’re right they are expensive.

A custom writing expert is a professional writer who provides tailored writing services to meet the specific needs of clients.

I think I like the "help me identify these songs" spams better.
So... Favorite composer is "Chris Nolan", hm?
