Lukas,
Thanks so much for this heads-up. I know you guys love to surprise us and keep us guessing - but it plays havoc with our pocketbooks. As a matter of fact - I was going to suggest that all you soundtrack labels forego the 'shock and awe' tactics and give us your production schedules!!! The way 'big' labels do - or at least used to. I mean - I'm getting so drained paying out for postage on titles then two days later having to order again. It would be so great to be able TO PLAN a bit. Get five titles at once and then have a break rather than this constant assault of absolutely indispensable purchases!!
With respect,
Bob Bryden
Canada
p.s. I ordered the Rozsa Box finally because Chris Malone concinved me that I need to support your
efforts by relegating as many of the old 'private' recordings as possible to the dead cd office.

OK, now that I am done lifting my jaw off the floor ....

POLTERGEIST is my #1 favorite Goldsmith score. I always suspected that FSM would get to do this one -- my hunch was spot on! (I remember guessing Twilight Zone The Movie being one too.)

My copy of the Rhino CD is well used, let me tell you. The booklet is slightly ripped and scuffed from numerous listens over the past 13 years. I remember ordering this from S.T.A.R. back in 1997, so happy to be finally getting a CD of Poltergeist.

I was never aware that the sound quality was substandard until recently, having read about it. It would be difficult for me to compare the LP with the Rhino CD, since my exposure to the LP is from a cassette tape a good friend made for me back in 1993. She bought the Poltergeist LP at a flee market for $5 and promptly dubbed it for me.

I was intensely fascinated by this music as a boy and a teenager. The movie itself has always been an amazing experience for me as well. This one cemented my interest in everything Goldsmith, the measuring stick by which all others were compared.

Poltergeist is also one of few "perfectly scored" pictures from Goldsmith. FIRST BLOOD, BASIC INSTINCT, all of the Franklin Schaffner fims ... Poltergeist had a caring director (well, sort of since Spielberg didn't technically direct it) who was considerate of Goldsmith's talents and let him have almost free reign over the score.

So Lukas -- what alternates can we expect on this new set?? wink

To prevent people from spending money for nothing: we will have a 2CD Poltergeist out later this year. Mike Matessino is going back to the source elements to improve upon the Rhino edition and also add a second disc of alternates and the LP program.

Lukas

Fantastic news! Thank you!

Wonderful news!!!!

I have the Rhino but will gladly purchase the FSM release.

Does this mean that there's a chance FSM might look at the Rhino North By Northwest? wink

I was just thinking the same thing! I just picked up the Rhino NbNW last night, for the sake of having the original recording, but I'd upgrade in a second. Great news with Poltergeist as well, I don't own that one. I think this bodes well for Ben-Hur as well...

This really will be a great year!

Thank you Lukas...I will happily upgrade my Rhino CD to your 2 disc edition as I love Poltergeist and think this is one of Goldsmiths finest hours (along with Total Recall and First Blood)

Word of this new release is as surprising as looking for a demonic clown doll under your bed, only to have him pop up behind you! But in a good way!

You'll get a Goldsmith tomorrow (1/14/10) and two more by summer from us.

Lukas

The one we got on 1/14 was Islands in the Stream. I assume one of the others is Poltergeist (I am SO there)... now I'm wondering what the third one is. I guess we'll find out later. smile

That is terrific news Lukas! I had a feeling FSM would get around to re-releasing this phenomenal score and I know it will be done right this time - thanks for giving us all an early heads up on this one!

Can this year get any better for film music lovers?!?!...crazy thing is, it probably will! smile

That was really nice of Lukas to divulge that this is coming to save people from re-buying it. I'm sure he would've liked to have kept it under wraps for longer. Very cool.

Quite a tidbit of news... perhaps the thread title should be changed?
