A floor-sweeping janitor whistles three notes of Goldfinger as Lazenby passes by in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. And two other diegetic film references in the James Bond franchise that haven't been mentioned include the 2001 pheasant-hunting horn salute and the Close Encounters of the Third Kind key code combination in Moonraker.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned (as far as I've seen) "The Long Goodbye" yet. That entire score toys with acting as referred-to-source and underscore (and sometimes both). If people are singing at a party, it's "The Long Goodbye;" if the bartender is learning a new song at his piano, it's "The Long Goodbye;" if there's a mariachi funeral band playing someone off or muzak in a convenience store, it's "The Long Goodbye;" and if you ring someone's doorbell, you'll hear the opening notes of "The Long Goodbye." Not only is it one of Williams' finest, most clever scores, but the application of the music (& theme) in the film is brilliant, and an inextricable part of the film's fabric. Plenty of references within the film. Also, though I've not seen the film in a few years, I vividly recall that either James Dean or Raymond Massey hums/sings one of Leonard Rosenman's themes from "East of Eden" to themselves at some point during the movie.

In the movie of Damn Yankees (I have not seen this on stage), Ray Walston teases/mocks Gwen Verdon's number 'Whatever Lola Wants' that she sang to seduce Joe Hardy.

Ben Wade (Glenn Ford) goes through most of 3:10 To Yuma whistling his own theme song.

Not a film, but a TV series: There wa an episode of "The Simpsons" where Bart comes whistling into the kitchen and it's Elfman's theme to the show he's whistling. Marge tells him something like, "Bart! I thought I told you to stop whistling that annoying thing!" I apologize if anybody brought it up -- I noly skimmed the thread: In "Waterworld", the young girl hums a theme Isham had written for the film before the switch in composers. I don't think any of this counts, but it's in the field: there's been a number of instances on "Family Guy" where there have been score in-jokes, aside from simply quoting another TV or movie theme in the score. There's this instance where Peter is snopping around outside a building and sneaking in and instead of snooping around score by the show's composer, Peter hums the whole thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkwwSJ_Z740 Then there's Peter singing the Indiana Jones theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MoEphRioOo Then once again, Peter singing the "Jurassic Park" theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucjEy7UhyUU There's no clip of this I can find currently on Youtube, but Brian has a relative dog who works in the porn industry and Brian gets into it and at an adult film awards show the speaker announces the candidates for Best Score in a porn film, which include animated versions of: Ron Jones (looks like it might actually be his studio they copied) Walter Murphy, who for some reason they made look like a crazy toothless person (which he doesn't really look like) Then ... John Williams, which cuts to Williams' face which is wide-eyed, and stern, conducting. The "camera" pulls away and he's got a large orchestra, performing very, very, very serious porn music.
