And of course we all remember Kate Hepburn plunking away on her piano at Andre Previn's haunting theme from Long Day's Journey Into Night during scenes in that film, right?

Well, the most obvious of all :

- The Five note motif from Close Encounters of the Third Kind (played or whistled by many of the characters, even including a phone !)

;-)

That's a bit different since the 5 notes were essential to the plot and then incorporated into Williams score.

Don't forget the Ghostbusters dancing to their own theme at a kid's birthday party in GHOSTBUSTERS 2. It really bothered me then, and now.

Just seen three films in a row where this happens:

The Eagle Has Landed (Lalo's main theme played dramatically by one of the German soldiers on the church organ just before the final showdown)

Twisted Nerve (my BlackBerry ring tone being whistled by Hywel Bennett's character AND the infamous jazz version danced to by the so-called teenagers at Susan's house)

Puppet on a Chain (dancing again, in an Amsterdam bar/club, by men in leather tunics and girls in silver catsuits, to a version of Piccioni's main title music).

Heck, it's everywhere!

(There's another, longer thread on this subject, but despite using the search engine (dammit) this was the only one I could find...)

A floor-sweeping janitor whistles three notes of Goldfinger as Lazenby passes by in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

And two other diegetic film references in the James Bond franchise that haven't been mentioned include the 2001 pheasant-hunting horn salute and the Close Encounters of the Third Kind key code combination in Moonraker.

The first scene of a 50s British war movie (could it be 'Ice Cold in Alex'?) has a guy driving a jeep across the desert and whistling the film's Main Title, which has just concluded.

LEGEND

In the director's cut of the film, Lily (Mia Sara) sings "My True Love's Eyes" to the Unicorn as Jack looks on.

--I'm not certain this counts, but what the heck--

I'm pretty sure that in JACK RYAN, the music playing on the radio in Chris Pine's room in his hotel at Moscow is a "Russian-elevator-style" version of Doyle's track "Jack Ryan, Mr. President".

From a song in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (score by Michel Legrand):
"Johann Sebastian Bach? Or maybe Boguslawski? Louis Armstrong, Ellington? Count Basie or Hampton? Or maybe you´d prefer Michel Legrand?"

Of course, just about anything can and does happen in that movie. Part of why I love it smile

Also...Our Man Flint: The President's red phone rings with Jerry Goldsmith's main theme.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned (as far as I've seen) "The Long Goodbye" yet. That entire score toys with acting as referred-to-source and underscore (and sometimes both). If people are singing at a party, it's "The Long Goodbye;" if the bartender is learning a new song at his piano, it's "The Long Goodbye;" if there's a mariachi funeral band playing someone off or muzak in a convenience store, it's "The Long Goodbye;" and if you ring someone's doorbell, you'll hear the opening notes of "The Long Goodbye." Not only is it one of Williams' finest, most clever scores, but the application of the music (& theme) in the film is brilliant, and an inextricable part of the film's fabric. Plenty of references within the film.

Also, though I've not seen the film in a few years, I vividly recall that either James Dean or Raymond Massey hums/sings one of Leonard Rosenman's themes from "East of Eden" to themselves at some point during the movie.

In the movie of Damn Yankees (I have not seen this on stage), Ray Walston teases/mocks Gwen Verdon's number 'Whatever Lola Wants' that she sang to seduce Joe Hardy.

Not a film, but a TV series:

There wa an episode of "The Simpsons" where Bart comes whistling into the kitchen and it's Elfman's theme to the show he's whistling. Marge tells him something like, "Bart! I thought I told you to stop whistling that annoying thing!"

I apologize if anybody brought it up -- I noly skimmed the thread:
In "Waterworld", the young girl hums a theme Isham had written for the film before the switch in composers.

I don't think any of this counts, but it's in the field: there's been a number of instances on "Family Guy" where there have been score in-jokes, aside from simply quoting another TV or movie theme in the score.

There's this instance where Peter is snopping around outside a building and sneaking in and instead of snooping around score by the show's composer, Peter hums the whole thing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkwwSJ_Z740

Then there's Peter singing the Indiana Jones theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MoEphRioOo

Then once again, Peter singing the "Jurassic Park" theme:

There's no clip of this I can find currently on Youtube, but Brian has a relative dog who works in the porn industry and Brian gets into it and at an adult film awards show the speaker announces the candidates for Best Score in a porn film, which include animated versions of:

Ron Jones (looks like it might actually be his studio they copied)

Walter Murphy, who for some reason they made look like a crazy toothless person (which he doesn't really look like)

Then ... John Williams, which cuts to Williams' face which is wide-eyed, and stern, conducting. The "camera" pulls away and he's got a large orchestra, performing very, very, very serious porn music.

IIRC, it's actually Desert Chase from Raiders.

BSG, Bear's theme for the final Cylons helps Starbuck steer the Galactica towards our lovely blue planet:

Here's an earlier scene (with some annoying embellishments by whoever uploaded it) where she first remembers the theme. Probably my favorite scene of the series. It was great to see the music play such a pivotal role!

The music connection with this theme goes even deeper.

If you intend to see the show, do NOT open the Spoiler tag. smile

The piece is the "Final Four Theme", which is almost synonymous with the use of "All Along The Watchtower".

That song could be heard all throughout the finale as the Galactica entered the Nebula by 4 characters that turn out to be the Final Four (really original four, but watch the show to get to that) cylon models.

So "All Along The Watchtower", and the theme Bear wrote that weaved through it, was the trigger for the final four to get together, and the notes of the final four theme remembered by Kara Thrace at the piano provided the co-ordinates to Earth (Our earth, not the "original" earth).

Those who have seen the series will tell you it's one of the hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck moments in the series.

On the first Harry Potter film, there's a scene where Hagrid plays Hedwig's theme in flute. In the sixth film, Hooper's In Noctem was performed by the Hogwarts choir in a deleted scene. Deathly Hallows Part 1 had a fragment of Desplat's choral piece My Love Is Always Here used as source music for the church singing in Godric's Hollow.

Rise Of The Guardians had a fanfare performed by the elves and written by Desplat. Philomena's main theme was used as carousel source music in one scene. In Up, Giacchino's theme for Charles Muntz is played in the background when Muntz shows his museum to Carl and Russell. In some of the Twilight films, Bella and Renesmee's lullabies we're played in piano by Edward.

The 1966 "Iron man" theme played as Tony Stark's ring tone in the first "Iron man" film.

That was meant as an in joke, and as such OK but I really hate it when they use a film's main theme in the film itself as source music in bars, at parties or on the radio.
