The Overture is really good. It relies far less on the main thematic elements from the film than does the Main Title or the Entr’acte or the Exit Music (which is almost a copy of the Main Title). The Overture begins as a string ostinato, imparting an air of anticipation and suspense, which gradually increases in intensity as the complete orchestra takes up the original string figure. The music becomes agitated as the percussion and brass become prominent and take up some of the battle music for the bulk of the 2.30 minutes. It ends on a partially unresolved crescendo. The complete roadshow version is available on the latest DVD and Blu-ray disc. The full length score would be a great release for FSM but the film was a co-production between Warner Bros and Cinerama Inc so I suppose that makes music clearance difficult. Sounds great. I love Frankel's gift for creating a sort of brooding, underground, seething discontent as if something's about to 'break through' either psychologically ('Night of the Iguana') or physically ('Battle of the Bulge'): there's a struggle in his music, and it is often unresolved. "there's a struggle in his music, and it is often unresolved". Good description William. That's exactly what the Battle of the Bulge Overture conveys.

2001: A Space Odyssey! Really? Ive seen the film many times and I just don't remember that. Guess I will have to pop in my Blu Ray. It was predominantly electronic effects. It was an excerpt from Gyorgy Ligeti's orchestral piece "Atmospheres".

I never knew there were so many films with Overtures. My first experience was Star Trek The Motion Picture and Black Hole. I always thought it was really cool, it got me in the mood for what I was about to watch. Yet I always loved film music anyway. Some seemed confused when music began to play, but the screen was black. They thought something was wrong with the film. Screens were not black during the Overture. The Overture began with the curtains still drawn and the auditorium lights on, with people still taking their seats. It was only the final 30 seconds or so that the lights began to dim and then the curtains opened as the Overture music came to an end. Many people were barely aware of the Overture music and would not have appreciated that it was composed especially for the film. I never knew that these were Overtures as well, until the Video and DVD came out. I thought the Cinema was just a playing a track from the Soundtrack album as background before the movie.

It's been a while since I've seen Ben-Hur but I now recall that the Entr'Acte starts the same as the Overture and then becomes different. The Entr'Actes for Lawrence and 2001 are the same as the respective Overtures, but in the latter case the Entr'Acte, I'm pretty sure, ends a bit sooner. A while back someone mentioned Fiddler on the Roof, which did not have an Overture, only an Entr'Acte. Mike

It seems to be odd when some major musicals did not have Overtures. Especially since the whole Overture form arose from theatrical music, operas, ballets and musicals.

The book Wide Screen Movies credits “Krakatoa, East of Java” with having an overture, entr’acte, and exit music in it’s initial engagements. “Where Eagles Dare” apparently also had an intermission and entr’acte for its 70mm engagements, but for home video this only appears on the laserdisc release of the film. Other titles with extra music include: BRIDGE TOO FAR, A (1977) (entr’acte) GOSPEL ROAD: A STORY OF JESUS (1973) (exit music) HUCKLEBERRY FINN (1974) (overture) NEW LAND, THE (1973) (entr’acte, exit music) SONG OF NORWAY (1970) (exit music) WILD ROVERS (1971) (overture, entr’acte, exit music) [video version]
