Well over a year since I bumped this one. I was beginning to give up hope but with Mister Moses, The Betsy, Peggy Sue Got Married all appearing within a couple of months, I feel that we Barry fans might be on a roll.

Maybe all the MOONRAKER buzz will provide a bit of an incentive for the labels to pursue some more Barry releases/expansions. One can only hope!

There's an unknown amount of Barry coming from LLLR' this year, so who knows...

Goodbye Lover, Year Of The Comet, The Cotton Club, or (here's a dream) a big fat juicy box set of the tv film scores (or at least a double album!) would all be welcome. Then there are proper CD releases of Legend Of The Lone Ranger, Man In The Middle and My Sister's Keeper (aka A Killing Affair). What about a 25th anniversary Dances release (my initial excitement on hearing of a release of this 'score in its entirety' evaporated on hearing an album which was anything but). What about Lolita and Brighton Rock? There's so much more yet to come out. Re-recordings of The Tamarind Seed, Seance On A Wet Afternoon (perhaps combined with the little mentioned but short and exciting Never Let Go). The Barry manuscript archives seem to be closed - but I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering if anything worthy is salvageable from The Seasons. Or what of the scores that never materialised but it's known that something, even if only demos, were composed (like The Invincibles). This is only my third post after years of visiting here but I think I'll be a-ranting here until justice is done!!! (Posting appreciations mind you as well - I love the new Peggy Sue release). And although Barry is my number one, to show I'm not impartial, I'll be a-pushing for some more Roy Webb, Billy Goldenberg and Jerome Moross...

What's the source of the "Goodbye Lover" demo theme that's on YouTube? Thanks!

I've given up on Legend of the Lone Ranger. Intrada couldn't find the elements and apparently coupling it with another title is not an option. So they could only reissue the album, which is short.

In fact, I've given up on Barry titles altogether except for those lesser known 70s titles that you mention, and Bells/Howard the Duck. I suspect re-recordings are the way forward now, but James Fitzpatrick doesn't have any planned for this year.

TBH we were pretty lucky to get three Barry titles in quick succession at the end of 2014. I think LLL has a Barry for this year but otherwise...

What was the promo? Does it have other Barry demos?

John Barry fans have done well since September 2014 with releases of 'Mister Moses', 'The Betsy', Peggy Sue Got Married, The Dove, Indecent Proposal and Dances With Wolves. These releases and all the others continue to give much pleasure..............................but when are we getting Goodbye Lover??

Has anyone any info, a hint, a clue, a small token of optimism maybe? Anything?

Thanks for any help smile

If this ever does see the light of day, I hope it's a better score than 'First Love'. I was actually quite disappointed with that one. Judging by the demo that Peter posted, it very well may be.

The Betsy......and all ... are in her possession ...............whether she would be prepared for someone to release these and other lost Barry treasures is a different matter..............but they are there make no mistake about that............

Lukas said he tried and tried and tried to find the RtT score, but couldn't. If it were as easy as contacting Barry's widow, I think we'd likely have that and any other missing Barry score. I'd have a hard time believing labels didn't contact him before his passing or her after his passing.

I remember being told by Rob Wood that when a label wanted to release the complete THE DEEP, long before the Intrada came out, Barry had said he would help that label get it out as much as he could, but the one thing he couldn't do is supply a tape because he didn't have one.

I also THINK (can't be sure to be honest) that before electing to re-record RAISE THE TITANIC, Silva Screen approached Barry about releasing the score and again, could not get a tape. But I say again, I'm not sure if I'm remembering that right. I might be confusing it with the story that Silva first wanted Barry to conduct their series of re-recordings but the number of sessions and the players he wanted made it too expensive.

But Martyn is quite an authority who has had inside access to Barry, so if he says the tapes are there, I have no reason to disbelieve him.

We know the Barry estate is cagey about lending out materials, maybe they are indeed there but simply not available to labels or indeed anyone else.

Who knows?

(Well, Martyn does probably.)

Cheers

Stephen...

So...are you saying that in the case of Raise the Titanic...John Barry himself...never had the Original Tapes..or even any kind of tapes? And let's say..the Bond Music...A View to a Kill, Moonraker, and so on...one would think?...That the John Barry Estate would have the Complete Original Material...Or even Barbara Broccoli or Michael Wilson?

Raise the Titanic..While it would of been Cheaper to Lower the Atlantic than to produce that Clunker of a Film..the Music is far superior than the film itself...When Nic Raine and City of Prague..did that rerecording...and you listen to the original on the film today...hands down...the more dynamic an crisp version is John Barry's own to the films version.

Wouldn't it be neat if Someone truly knew where the recordings were and could be released ..The Originals.

I wouldn't know what John Barry himself had.

What I'm saying is, well, what I posted ... which is that in at least one case and probably two, the Barry estate said they couldn't help with tapes.

But like I said, whether that's because they really don't have them or don't want to lend them out is something I could never know.

In an interview, JB was once asked why he didn't put Raise The Titanic on Moviola 2 and JB said he'd "pulled the score out" but didn't think it was good enough to include. Does "pulled the score out" mean he listened to a tape, watched the movie or that he pulled out the written score?

Well, whether he had a tape of it or the original written score or not, Silva Screen got neither and when they opted to re-record it, Nic Raine had to reconstruct the written score by ear.

Honestly, I don't know.

All I was doing is trying to reconcile what Martyn said (that the Barry estate has it all) with what someone else said (effectively, "Surely Barry would have been asked already?") with an anecdote about The Deep and the possibility that the estate just isn't up for lending this stuff out.

Here's another one. When I was in email correspondence with Barry, I mentioned I'd seen an article from a music professor saying he'd love to study the written score of Goldfinger and got told (by Laurie, who sometimes replied on behalf of her husband) that these private scores are not available for study.

It may all be there, I wouldn't know. Martyn knows better than me on that stuff.

Cheers

Regardless of whether the Barry estate has tapes, do they own the rights? Surely not. Barry did a job of work, was paid and moved on. The rights are with the publishing company and the film/record company.

With regard to Goodbye Lover, my understanding is that the tapes exist. Director and Barry fan, Wayne Kramer has listened to them. Lukas looked into releasing the score but said there were rights issues.

We must keep our fingers crossed. Maybe 2016 is the year.
