I have these two scores (along with many others) on old cassette's, taped right off the telly, via VHS, back in the days when there was only 3 or 4 channels on TV to watch.
Cool themes, inventive orchestration, all allied to that pure Goldsmith sound.
These make up for my not wanting, or ordering his DAVID LEV score (never cared for it).
Hopefully, if I'm still up and running in 10-20 years, I'll be doing some similar whoo-hooing on a similar announcement like A FEW DAYS IN WEASEL CREEK coupled with A PIANO FOR MRS CIMINO.

How refreshing it is to find that none of the "anti-mono" folks aren't complaining bitterly about these being "monaural" recordings.

Goldsmith must be too esoteric to catch their attention!

wink

Any release (mono or stereo) of great music is to be celebrated!!!

Agreed and if its Goldsmith its Ordered with me, allowing for money too, I had enough from my cd sales for the Star Trek Box to get this one too.

Both BROTHERHOOD OF THE BELL and THE MEPHISTO WALTZ were directed by Paul Wendkos.

Wendkos evidently was happy with Goldsmith's BELL score and asked him to score MEPHISTO the very next year for him.

I believe they possibly first met and worked together in early TV, on PLAYHOUSE 90, STUDIO ONE, G.E. THEATRE or CLIMAX.

Paul Wendkos also directed the 1968 Pilot for HAWAII FIVE-0 - he also directed the 1972 TV movie, "The Strangers In 7A", that starred Andy Griffith and featured a wonderful score by Morton Stevens...:-)

Just got a shipment notice, too. I'm stoked! Will probably be enjoying this and the new Melle by Friday.

This looks (and sounds) like a winner - order placed!

Also, Morton Stevens was Music Supervisor for both of these productions and he hired Jerry to compose the music...pretty cool!...:-)

Gone for this one.

I have to say that I'm getting more and more into Goldsmith. A few years ago I would never have picked this title up. There were a few titles I liked but not many. I now have 30 CDs (soon to be 31).

I was once the same way about 30 years ago with only a few Goldsmith soundtracks compared to a lot of Williams, Herrmann, etc. Then I started to really understand his amazing talent as a composer and the greater depths of his music and now I'm somewhere in the 190 range for JG scores, far surpassing any other composer. It can be very addictive and get costly so watch out! smile

Oh Jeez. My favourite scores after Gil Mellé's THE ORGANIZATION. Divorced again. I haven't had this craving since I gave up chocolate.

I know a lot of microbrews that go well with chocolate.

By the way, that's ROBERT Pine, not RICHARD Pine being initiated as a brother. Pine, of course, later went on to play the C.H.P. chief in "CHiPS".

Seeing this title, it had a lot of appeal. But after listening to the samples I have to say I'm not won over. Great release though for those who love the early Goldsmith thriller music. I'll wait for crawlspace smile

I am curious if you are referring to the sound quality of the recording, or Goldsmith's serial atonal idiom?
[1968 through 1972 was Goldsmith's most intense period both with respect to compositional acheivement and changes/turmoil in his private life]

"Chief"? You mean Sergeant Getraer!

I remember "Soundtrackman" and me both taping these Goldsmith treats off TV with our trusty reel-to-reels back in the day. This was the same year that CROSSCURRENT showed up as THE CABLECAR MURDERS. It's going to be a real treat hearing these in pristine clean mono without all the dialogue and efx.

I also hope this means that CBS is open to further releases in the future. There's a ton of great Morton Stevens and things like John Andrew Tartaglia's punchy score from POWDERKEG, the pilot that sired THE BEARCATS with Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole (????)

Definitely the music itself, not the quality. And I personally see the end of the 70's as his best compositional period. Regarding Brotherhood & Step Out of Line, the samples just didn't do it for me. From that period I love his scores to Planet of the Apes & Escape, The Other, ... but these two scores... I don't know. I like his early atonal writing (Satan Bug), but this just sounds like examples of an "in between" score. He doesn't hit one out of the park with every score he composes, a lot of his earlier scores are hit or miss for me.

My God - THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE BELL is an extraordinary score. I'm simply awestruck by its profound sadness and eeriness. Out of all the Goldsmith treasures to come out in the last year or so, this may be my favorite - and it's something I never even knew about before. Who cares whether new film music is good or not when we keep receiving incredible gifts from the past such as this?

How odd!
Two beautiful and never seen before Jerry's soundtracks NOT YET sold-out.
Is economy really going down?

Well, maybe people just don't feel it's as important as other work, or are not that obsessive about owning every last thing by Jerry.

I mean, is it in the same class as Capricorn One? Boys From Brazil? Not in a million years.

When I saw it come up, I hovered. On the one hand, I'm not a Goldsmith completist and it did kinda feel like I'd be entering "bottle cap" territory. On the other hand, I figured (a) Goldsmith is my 2nd favourite composer, (b) Contract On Cherry Street was great, and (c) it might go quick.

So I bought.

And ... honest truth? Yeah, it's perfectly fine and nothing wrong with it, but on the other hand it doesn't do anything for me either. In the end, my honest conclusion is I'd never have particularly missed this if it'd never come out.

Am I glad it came out? Sure. Not so much for me, but because I feel for my fellow soundtrack collectors.

But I can understand why it wasn't an instant sell out.

Cheers

Why should it sell out?

These titles weren't exactly heavily requested, like other Goldsmith titles, and I have never heard or seen any of these films.

Now I bought a copy and I found the music to be very good but Goldsmith has certainly done better.

Mmm, the two of you gave perfectly reasonable explanations.
Yet I have some doubt. Think about:

Escape From The Planet Of The Apes

highly requested, over-the-top jerry's score, never before released and still available after many months (400 copies).
