Cool themes, inventive orchestration, all allied to that pure Goldsmith sound. These make up for my not wanting, or ordering his DAVID LEV score (never cared for it). Hopefully, if I'm still up and running in 10-20 years, I'll be doing some similar whoo-hooing on a similar announcement like A FEW DAYS IN WEASEL CREEK coupled with A PIANO FOR MRS CIMINO. Goldsmith must be too esoteric to catch their attention! Wendkos evidently was happy with Goldsmith's BELL score and asked him to score MEPHISTO the very next year for him. I believe they possibly first met and worked together in early TV, on PLAYHOUSE 90, STUDIO ONE, G.E. THEATRE or CLIMAX. Paul Wendkos also directed the 1968 Pilot for HAWAII FIVE-0 - he also directed the 1972 TV movie, "The Strangers In 7A", that starred Andy Griffith and featured a wonderful score by Morton Stevens...:-)    Posted:   Sep 14, 2010 - 12:08 PM     By:   Bill Cooke   (Member) Just got a shipment notice, too. I have to say that I'm getting more and more into Goldsmith. A few years ago I would never have picked this title up. There were a few titles I liked but not many. I was once the same way about 30 years ago with only a few Goldsmith soundtracks compared to a lot of Williams, Herrmann, etc. Then I started to really understand his amazing talent as a composer and the greater depths of his music and now I'm somewhere in the 190 range for JG scores, far surpassing any other composer. Divorced again. I haven't had this craving since I gave up chocolate. But after listening to the samples I have to say I'm not won over. Great release though for those who love the early Goldsmith thriller music. I'll wait for crawlspace I am curious if you are referring to the sound quality of the recording, or Goldsmith's serial atonal idiom? This was the same year that CROSSCURRENT showed up as THE CABLECAR MURDERS. It's going to be a real treat hearing these in pristine clean mono without all the dialogue and efx. I also hope this means that CBS is open to further releases in the future. There's a ton of great Morton Stevens and things like John Andrew Tartaglia's punchy score from POWDERKEG, the pilot that sired THE BEARCATS with Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole (????)    Posted:   Sep 16, 2010 - 3:24 AM     By:   Francis   (Member) I am curious if you are referring to the sound quality of the recording, or Goldsmith's serial atonal idiom? And I personally see the end of the 70's as his best compositional period. Regarding Brotherhood & Step Out of Line, the samples just didn't do it for me. From that period I love his scores to Planet of the Apes & Escape, The Other, ... but these two scores... I don't know. I like his early atonal writing (Satan Bug), but this just sounds like examples of an "in between" score. I'm simply awestruck by its profound sadness and eeriness. Out of all the Goldsmith treasures to come out in the last year or so, this may be my favorite - and it's something I never even knew about before. I mean, is it in the same class as Capricorn One? Boys From Brazil? Not in a million years. When I saw it come up, I hovered. On the one hand, I'm not a Goldsmith completist and it did kinda feel like I'd be entering "bottle cap" territory. On the other hand, I figured (a) Goldsmith is my 2nd favourite composer, (b) Contract On Cherry Street was great, and (c) it might go quick. So I bought. And ... honest truth? Yeah, it's perfectly fine and nothing wrong with it, but on the other hand it doesn't do anything for me either. In the end, my honest conclusion is I'd never have particularly missed this if it'd never come out. Am I glad it came out? Sure. Not so much for me, but because I feel for my fellow soundtrack collectors. But I can understand why it wasn't an instant sell out. Why should it sell out? These titles weren't exactly heavily requested, like other Goldsmith titles, and I have never heard or seen any of these films. Yet I have some doubt.
