Many years ago this was the first Golden Age score I took a chance on as a blind buy (the unofficial release). It was also the first score that opened my eyes to the fact that there was terrific film music before John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, and Danny Elfman, and that the age of a score didn't necessarily speak to how engaging or enjoyable it would be. This led me to take other chances on older scores that reaped further rewards, such as with Herrmann, Waxman, and Mandel. As for this score, it is hardly subtle music, in line with the musical approach of the time, and there is definitely some sturm-und-drang war music that may be overbearing to some ears, but what impresses me is the nuance and sophistication that Newman still manages to maintain throughout. The love theme, which has been mentioned, is proof of this, but what I find truly moving about the score is the brief but beautiful theme of heroism that underscores the escape scenes at the end. I don't think it's featured on the sound samples, but that theme, short as it may be, is what really made the score for me.

Mr Kimmel, the catalog of this release shows the composer as Donaggio. A little amendment is needed. Good catch - it's being fixed. It was only in the list, nowhere else.

This score is a must for anyone who appreciates Alfred Newman. It's Newman at his most professional, a variegated score with action cues, a transcendant love theme, and even an element of his famous spirituality. This score and NEVADA SMITH are pretty much equals in Newman's skill at composing. The man was a genius. I hope it sells out fast.

It's Newman at his most professional, a variegated score with action cues, a transcendant love theme, and even an element of his famous spirituality. This score and NEVADA SMITH are pretty much equals in Newman's skill at composing. The man was a genius. I hope it sells out fast. And what's really amazing is how fresh the music is - after all those years toiling and doing at Fox and those hundreds of scores, the fact that his inspiration was so high that he could, in one year, give us Traitor and How The West Was Won is astonishing. And then, years later, astonish further with Nevada Smith and his wonderful score to Airport.

While many composers reached a creative plateau in their waning years, Al and Franz were still growing. Arguably, most of Waxman's best efforts were written in the last 10 years of his life (PEYTON PLACE, SAYONARA, SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS, THE NUN'S STORY, BELOVED INFIDEL, SUNRISE AT CAMPOBELL and TARAS BULBA) while Newman gave us COUNTERFEIT TRAITOR, HOW THE WEST WAS WON, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, NEVADA SMITH, FIRECREEK and AIRPORT. Also, his underscoring of CAMELOT was masterful and much more than just adapting the songs.
