Was this picture a success at the time of release? I'm embarrassed to say that I'd never heard of it. The appalling conclusion is that my mental decline (or else my disengagement from mainstream Hollywood movies) had set in as early as 1994!

No, it wasn´t a success. The humor was a bit too much tongue-in-cheek for audiences as well as the numerous in-jokes and intended foolishness. There were few critics who liked it. One of them was Roger Ebert who said: ""The Shadow" is the kind of movie that plays better, the more baggage you bring to it. If you respond to film noir, if you like dark streets and women with scarlet lips and big fast cars with running boards, the look of this movie will work some kind of magic."

He even mentions Goldsmith´s score in passing - which is rare for him since he never mentions scores in general.

On Rotten Tomatoes the movie has an average rating of 34% and if I may mention my own opinion it´s very rare that a comic movie mocks its own genre, sometimes quite intelligent even. I for one always loved the movie.

i liked it up to point, for me the second half lacked intensity, much like the recent spider man movie, i felt that not enough work was put in to the antagonist.

cannot fault the score though, ordered in a flash.

IMHO, the acting was atrocious and the jokes embarrassingly bad. Everyone flat-lined. But the score? Awesome!

It's Intrada. They don't do limited editions anymore.

Sure they do. They just don't announce the limitation restrictions anymore, in order to head off the mad rush and the angry fans who miss out when demand for a title snowballs and it disappears within a day or two.

I thought the way it worked was this:

Yes, they are limited, but if they sell out too quick, they'll extend it. And by not announcing either (a) the original limit; and (b) the extension, they ensure it's available for a reasonable amount of time for everyone to have a fair shout at getting it.

Am I right?

Cheers

Awesome! I have fond memories of this score in high school.
The film itself has some major flaws, but I always felt the score was a Goldsmith gem.
And I agree, I never understood why The Shadow's appearance became so... "literal" in the movie. Weird.

One of the most thrilling releases of the year. I'll echo the cover art praise. Stunning.

One of my favorite things about The Shadow is his ability to turn himself into a shape-shifting vapor to effectively beat up all the thugs on the bridge, but after it's all over, he still needs to take a taxi home.

LOL! But that's only an illusion. Remember, he can cloud people's minds.

It doesn't take much to cloud Shaun's mind.

The low budget 1930’s and 1940’s films and a serial that feature The Shadow are also a hoot if you are in the right mood (hint more than a couple glasses of red wine) but can be sheer torture if you are not:

The Shadow Strikes
International Crime
The Shadow (serial)
The Shadow Returns
Behind the Mask
The Missing Lady.

“Behind the Mask” and “The Missing Lady” are available on Netflix streaming. They are extremely low low bargain basement budget – the Shadow is not even remotely menacing as played by the extremely handsome Kane Richmond (who has a great profile…). He's portrayed as sort of a misogynistic prig.

I can’t wait to get this latest Intrada release when funds allow – Mr. Goldsmith’s score adds an immeasurable sense of intrigue, adventure, and exotic flavour to the film. I only have an lp version so this is a most welcome upgrade. I enjoy the film – great cast all around – it just seems a tad action prosaic at key points – with a great villain. IMHO.

Added note: "Chandu the Magician" - 1932 - directed by the amazing William Cameron Menzies has sort of a "Shadow" feel -- a plot with a super-hero magician using mind control and hypnosis to oppose a great great villain in Bela Lugosi! It is a rousing and beautifully designed film.

Thank you Intrada for doing this score justice... Doug and crew have done it again! Ordered along with Craig Safan's rejected Wolfen score. smile

2012 ROCKS!

This is, by far, one of my all-time favorite Goldsmith scores and one of the last few big ones that I wanted expanded. I can't say thank you enough to everyone who made this possible. A gorgeous release. I can't wait to hear it!

This movie got me interested in The Shadow. Love the movie and it's great to the score released. Like First Knight and The Edge, I never thought they would get re-released with more music. Didn't an earthquake ruin the original Hall of Mirrors set?

I believe that is what happened and forced the ending to be re-written on the set. But at least part of the original ending was filmed, because I've seen some grainy screencaps involving the hall of mirrors that aren't in the film.
